Another positive experience with the Core LED lantern
I just got to use this lantern (camping) this past weekend, and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. There is debate here as to whether this lantern is really 500 lumens. Or people worrying if its run-time is actually what is rated. I propose a different line of thinking1) Does it really matter if this lantern is 500 lumens? I looked at a few other lanterns on Amazon, and read reviews, and some of these don't even attempt to make any claims as to the brightness of their lanterns at all. Does this inspire confidence in those other products? Not to me. Are there brighter lanterns out there? I suspect so (albeit also possibly at a much higher cost). But this one sure was bright enough for what I needed...I'm sure not worrying about it.2) The manufacture rates this lantern at 19/65 hours on High/Low. I sure haven't tested it, but I wouldn't really care if it didn't quite achieve these values. It will obviously run a very long time in any case, and three D cells are cheap and easy to have a backup set of alkalines, which have a shelf life of a decade or so.3) I appreciate that the manufacturer chose to use Cree LEDs, as I'm confident that these are not junk LEDs. In fact, the entire lantern, imo, reflects the manufacturer choosing to put out a quality product. The lantern feels and looks solid. This also increases my confidence in the product.4) It simply worked. Every time I clicked the button on/off or high/low. It gave a good amount of light. It is small and simple to pack, and with alkalines, should last for many camping trips. It was sooo much easier and convenient to use than my old fuel-based lantern(s), and so superior to older generation battery-powered bulb-based lanterns.5) All of the above...for under $20. How can you beat that? In fact, I'm so happy and confident in this product, that I've already bought some additional ones for emergency backup lighting at our business, should the power go out. Thanks Core Equipment for putting out a solid product for not that much money...very satisfied with this product.

Very bright light - lantern lasted us 4 years
I am liking this light a lot. We got it for hurricane season to replace a Rayovac Sportsman lantern that no longer worked. Today, I loaded the three D batteries in my new lantern and LOVE how easy it was to close up the bottom. I continue to struggle getting the bottom screw-on piece with the three remaining Rayovacs we own - you have to line up the bottom piece just right; so frustrating. This new Cree lantern is very very bright (almost hurt-your-eyes bright) and has two settings - press once for a high light, press a second time for a lower light and then press a third time to turn it off. I just put another one in my cart and am thinking of giving the 4 D battery version a try as well. I'll be buying a few more to give as gifts for family.6/19/20 Revised review only because the lantern now will not work even with batteries replaced with new ones. The terminals all look clean and have been wiped off anyway. So, this lantern lasted almost 4 years for us which is longer than other brands have lasted. After 4 years of using it, we liked that light was very bright and the bottom was easy to screw back on after changing the batteries, largely because of the post on the cap that's inserted into the lantern bottom. Made changing batteries very easy. Didn't like that the light was hurt your eyes right because the glass is not frosted. The lantern was, for us, best used sitting atop a tall bookcase to get the light out of our eyes and, instead, cast down into the entire room. So, all in all, this was a nice, very bright light. Would we buy another one? Maybe, but there are many other lanterns out there to try out at lower cost.

Really Bright
I got this lantern for power outages in CA. Not knowing how bright a "lumen" is, I got 500 lumens. Wow, is it bright. Too bright to read by unless lantern is draped with a cloth to tone it down. Otherwise, it is lightweight and easy to load the batteries into. This lantern takes 3 D batteries, but I had a hard time finding this information on the description or even the package instructions.

Ready when you need it
I bought this over a year ago, and loaded it up and got it ready for the storm season. Yesterday Gulf Power managed to blow out enough transformers so that power was off in my neighborhood. I figured it would be for a couple hours only so I pulled out my THREE Coleman LED lanterns and my Core lantern. Of the Colemans, two had the rechargeable packs, and one the 4 D-Cell pack. The Core lit great with no problems. Lit up the 15X15 room enough to read by. Now the COLEMANS, One had the 4 D-Cell pack and lit off well. Of the two with the rechargeable pack, both were dead. My fault for not maintaining the charge I guess, but I have other things to do. No sweat because I had a spare D-Cell pack. Opened it to replace the battery and the plastic hinge broke making it unusable. Tried playing with it further, and I never could figure out how to place the batteries polarity wise. I opened the D Cell Coleman that worked and tried to open the battery pack to look at how they were placed inside, and gave up after 15 minutes. tried the Core to see if replacing batteries was a similar hassle, and the bottom unscrews easily. Looks like it has a gasket for water resistance. Long story short, ONE of the three Colemans worked when I needed it to.

It is compact and seems well built
We ordered two of these lanterns, and one came in its original package, and one in a generic package. The one in the generic package had probably been returned to Amazon. The reason became apparent, namely, it had two low settings, rather than a low and a high setting. The person handling returns should have checked. The cost of returning the item is not worth the benefit of having a high and low setting. Otherwise, we are pleased with both lanterns.

Poor shipping box
The shipping box was poor quality. The Light was broken, i has fixed it. Less expensive that shipping back. It is sad, because it is a good light. I have 4 of the same model
