Leaf Hydrox America's Original Cookie, 8.6 Ounce (Pack of 6)

Just bought Hydrox for the first time, after hearing about the David-and-Goliath story of how Oreo has been hiding the Hydrox product on store shelves, pressuring retailers not to carry Hydrox, or threatening retailers with fewer varieties of Oreos if they do carry Hydrox. Couldn't resist buying these to support the little guy, and caring less about the taste. Much to my surprise, the cookies are quite good! They are firmer than Oreos, which means they don't dissolve in milk quite as quickly, but I think that just lets you enjoy the cookie more. The cream filing is quite thick, and I agree with those who say there is better balance of sweetness in the Hydrox, and the cookies are more chocolatey. The only drawback was that in the package I opened, there were a good many broken ones, which rather detracts from the eating experience. The cookies don't seem to adhere to the filling, but I don't know if that is a shipping/handling issue or maybe something in the recipe that needs to be worked out. If the next package is similarly broken, I will lodge a complaint. Yes, they are a bit expensive, but have you seen the price of Oreos lately?

I couldn't believe it when I stumbled on the Amazon webpage for these cookies! Like so many others, I grew up on these. I never cared for their inferior competitors, and always insisted on Hydrox by Sunshine Bakers. It was a sad day when Sunshine folded, as I preferred all of their baked goods over their competition. No, I'm not saying these are the best cookies ever made, but they were the best "store-bought" cookies, in my opinion. But I digress; seeing these for sale again first just blew-me away. I thought, "Oh, these can't be the same". Then, "Oh, they could never taste like a real Hydrox!" But, I couldn't resist and immediately placed an order and prepared to wait. Well, they didn't surprise me by showing up in a couple of days (actually, from what I read it could have been a month, plus to get them), but they did come reasonably quickly (they arrived 9 days after ordering). As soon has I opened the shipping box I had to have a cookie, I was dying to find out. Are they like an original Hydrox? Not having tasted one since around 1996, but having spent almost 45 years eating them, I can honestly tell you that these are Hydrox! They immediately had my tastebuds wanting more. As far as I'm concerned, this company, Leaf, has done it! They've resurrected the original cookie. Even the fancy embossed pattern that is on both sides of the cookie looks real (it maybe different, but whatever they've done it looks the part). And right in the middle of the cookie it says, "Hydrox". Thank you Leaf for bringing back this cherished memory from my childhood and doing it in a manner that tastes and looks like Sunshine never left. I'll be back for more!

I grew up in the 90s with Oreos always around the house, and it was a very normal thing to come home from school and dunk a few Oreos in a glass of milk. Every now and then over the last 20 years, my dad would wax nostalgic for Hydrox and say that as much as he enjoyed Oreos, he really missed Hydrox. So when I stumbled across news that Leaf was going to be bringing back the original Hydrox recipe, I knew I had to get an order in as soon as they came out--both for me and for him. Unlike many other reviewers, I don't have a memory of the original Hydrox (by the time I came of age to care about such things, the few reincarnations of Hydrox were poorly-executed reproductions by Keebler and Kellogg. So, while I can't claim first-hand that they're "just like I remember" or anything, I can objectively say that these are a superior cookie to Oreo. I can only eat a few Oreos plain before being overwhelmed with the sickly-sweet flavor and Crisco-like consistency of the creme (though dunking them in milk mellows them out, which is how I always eat them). These, on the other hand...well, let's just say that I have to watch myself in order to avoid eating more than one whole package in a single sitting. The sweetness is present but not overwhelming, and the deeper, richer, darker chocolate flavor offsets the sweetness nicely. The creme has a much softer, creamier flavor and firmer texture. The whole cookie stands up much better and more cohesively than crumbly Oreos do, and it's also noticeably heftier than a standard Oreo. I will say that Oreos actually take to milk slightly better--Hydrox's firmer, denser (and probably higher-quality) wafer actually doesn't absorb milk as readily as Oreos do, but holding the Hydrox cookie in the milk a good bit longer helps to overcome that and has the benefit of forcing you to pace yourself. (Oreos get soggy much quicker than Hydrox do.) All that said, the ultimate review of the cookie may actually come from my father, who called me on the afternoon of September 28, when he received his package, and told me that I was the best son ever and that the cookies were *exactly* as he remembered. (He then called me a few weeks later to let me know that his supply was getting low. That made it very easy to decide what to get him for Christmas.) I don't buy a ton of snack foods or sweet things, but this is one thing I think will be regularly holding a place in my cupboard for a good, long while.

These are delicious... I always meant to try them but hey oreo was always on sale... then they disappeared from stores... Come to find out when researching...OREO IS A KNOCK OFF VERSION. So when they were re-released with all the natural ingredients and made in the USA I was like OK gotta try em! So let's start off by saying better ingredients and better taste. The cookies are crisper and don't turn into complete mush in milk... the crisp cookie part is less sweet than a oreo cookie. Maybe cause the use cane sugar and not corn syrup.... I dunno corn syrup product seem to leave my mouth feeling yucky... The filling is just as much as an oreo if not a tad more... but not over blown.... The filling when licking it is still dense but creamy and smooth.... its very satisfying from my stand point of picking the cream... this beats oreo again. So all around THESE ARE BETTER THAN THE OREO who copied them. These are as pricey as a pack of oreos at full price... But then again I WONT PAY FULL PRICE for Oreos.... they better be on sale...lol These I WILL PAY FULL PRICE FOR. There is something to be said for made in America with quality ingredients. I'm glad I bought the box of these... now I'm not buying oreos cause this case pack is dated for a year from now... so I got time to enjoy them... I'm so glad I took the plung and just ordered them.

I thought I would never ever taste these cookies again. I actually ordered TWO boxes of them (embarrassing... but that's how much I've missed Hydrox cookies). I also found out I'm selfish. My husband said he'd never had a Hydrox cookie... thot maybe they were never sold in Texas?? I gave him 2... but no more. I actually had to make him bread pudding to atone for my selfishness... So... here's the thing. They're good, but not quite like the old Hydrox. 1. The filling used to be ever so slightly gritty (not sure how to describe it?). The flavor seems to be right with these, but the filling is way softer, creamier and squishier than it used to be. I love love LOVED that filling. Used to split the cookies and eat the filling and THEN eat the cookies. 2. The chocolate cookie. The taste and the crunchiness is right. But, they're a whole lot more crumbly than the old Hydrox. Leave crumbs all over everything. 3. The assembly of the cookies is sloppy. The filling is skimpy, doesn't extend to the edges, and the thickness of the filling is inconsistent from side to side and even from cookie to cookie. Sometimes it's so off that one of the two cookies is slanted all caddy-wompus. Soooooo, to sum it up. They're close... but they could be better.

I remember these cookies from when I was a kid. Way better than Oreo's .

I don't know if these are exactly like the ones that were in my childhood dinosaur lunch box or not. I can barely remember how things tasted last week, neverminded 35 years ago when my tastebuds were far more sensitive. So many cookies from the store have no texture now, they're just mush. Not sure how that came about, but Hydrox does not have this problem. The wafers actually taste like something (chocolate!!!) and have a pleasant crunch to them. Yes, they don't soke up milk like a sponge...because they are not the consistency of a sponge. I'd rather have the crunch. The filling is solid and like the wafers is not astronomically sweet like most others on the shelf. You can also parse out the flavor of the filling from the cookie while eating it, can't say that about the others either. Now, they are still cookies and are still sweet, not a "healthy alternative" at all. Cane sugar is the first ingredient after all. But, they don't have six different kinds of corn sweeteners in them that make them taste like compressed hummingbird food that leaves a horrible residue in your mouth either. I wish they were available in stores, its my only complaint as buying a case just for me is pretty nutty. But, once a year I splurge and freeze most of them. They freeze well and its doesn't impact the experience at all. Highly recommended.

Wonderful! Just like the olden days and much better than Oreos!value for the money is good because they are so delicious. I gave some away to fans of Hydrox like myself and everyone was delighted! They were very fresh.
