Published for the 175th anniversary of Glenfarclas, this books covers the rich and comprehensive history of the Glenfarclas distillery and the Grant's family. It offers an interesting perspective from a mid-size distillery and its vulnerability to the whisky business (blends) that led the Grant to reduce their dependency on the blended market by developing a market for their single malt.The next sections are dedicated to the people making the whisky, the brand and some personalities attached to Glenfarclas. Of note, this book does not include an exhaustive list of bottles released so far.In conclusion, an excellent book, written with passion and beautifully illustrated. A book to savour with a fine glass of Glenfarclas whisky, fairly price considering its qualities.

Die Whiskys der Glenfarclas-Brennerei genießen unter den Liebhabern des schottischen Nationalgetränks geradezu Kultstatus. Als eine der wenigen alten Brennereien konnte sich Glenfarclas die Unabhängigkeit erhalten und befindet sich immer noch in Familienbesitz (neben Springbank und Glenfiddich/Balvenie). 2011 konnte die Brennerei ihren 175. Geburtstag feiern. Der bekannte Whiskyautor Ian Buxton würdigte dieses Ereignis mit dem vorliegenden englischsprachigen Buch. In mehreren Kapiteln werden die Entstehung und Geschichte der Brennerei dargelegt, die Besitzer und Mitarbeiter von Glenfarclas sowie einige interessante Verbindungen der Brennerei vorgestellt (u.a. mit der schwedischen Metal-Band "In Flames", der französischen Weinfirma Mähler-Besse und der Scotch Malt Whisky Society). Natürlich wird im Buch auch erläutert, weshalb die Whiskys von Glenfarclas so besonders sind. Garniert sind die Kapitel mit etlichen schönen und auch künstlerisch durchaus anspruchsvollen Fotografien.Wie der Whisky, so das Buch. Alleine der Einband gibt hier den ersten Fingerzeig. Wo andere Firmen auf schreiend bunt, Hochglanz und großen Schlagzeilen machen, wird hier edel mit den beiden Farben rot und schwarz sowie eingestanzten Buchstaben gearbeitet. Der Rest des Werkes präsentiert sich ähnlich wertig und ein wenig anders als die üblichen Whiskybücher.Bei solch einer "Lohnarbeit" darf man kein allzu kritisches Buch erwarten. Aber es handelt sich auch nicht um eine reine Webebroschüre. Der lang anhaltende Erfolg der Familie Grant mit ihrer Brennerei gibt da auch wenig Anlass zu Kritik. Für Freunde der Glenfarclas-Whiskys stellt das Werk eine absolute Pflichtlektüre dar, für die übrigen Leser ein interessantes Stück schottischer Wirtschaftsgeschichte. Leider kostet dieses repräsentative, tolle und sehr informative Buch aber auch eine schöne Stange Geld. Das ist der einzige Wermutstropfen dieses Werkes.

Ian Buxton ist ein Autor mit einer vorzüglichen Sprache. Es macht so richtig Freude, seine Formulierungen und Aussagen zu lesen. Er breitet detailliert die Geschichte einer der wenigen noch heute familiengeführten schottischen Brennereien aus. Anlässlich des 175 jährigen Jubiläums stellt Buxton eine lesenswerte Dokumentation der Whisky-Destillation einer Speyside Brennerei vor. Geschichten und Anekdoten ergänzen den stimmungsvollen Einblick in die schottische Whisky-Historie am Beispiel von Glenfarclas. Ausdrucksstarke Fotos und ein eindrucksvolles Layout verbunden mit einer guten Buchbindung machen diese Abhandlung zu einem Schmuckstück jeder Whisky-Bibliothek. Sehr empfehlenswert. Five stars for production values, three to four stars for content, overall a four star book.This is about as handsome a volume as any you could buy. But perhaps I missed the obvious clues, when I made my purchase, that this is a "vanity publication" that was commissioned to celebrate what might be the 175th anniversary of the Glenfarclas distillery - not a disinterested historian's work at all. [I say "might be" because precisely when Glenfarclas was "born" is about as clear as the real birthdate, birthplace and "inventor" of the game of baseball]. But that does not necessarily detract from the pleasure in owning and reading about this now somewhat unique distillery - unique because it as yet has not fallen into the hands of a booze conglomerate or hedge fund investors and remains a family owned operation - albeit quite a considerable one. Along with a history of the distillery and some pretty stunning photos of the distillery and the countryside around it, the book includes brief profiles of current distillery personnel, from the tour guide and accountant to the present day members of the Grant family who own and run the place. Profiles of notable scotch lovers and collectors like Pip Hills. Even snapshots of the 175th anniversary celebration party.The book will leave you feeling you've gotten to know the "Glenfarclas family"; a vicarious experience of Glenfarclas, the single malt whisky; and, if you care about Scotch malt whisky at all, a hankering to go beyond the vicarious experience and to taste the output of the distillery in its many "expressions," from the extensive available "Family Cask" and other vintage bottlings, to the current crop of age dated expressions up to age 40; to "collectible" older bottlings now only on the secondary market.A book well worth the tariff - this really is a deluxe production.
