Simple but beautiful story about bears preparing for hibernation
In this book, a bear prepares for hibernation just as his parents taught him to do. Along the way he meets another bear who joins in the preparations. As winter sets in, the two curl up in a bear hug in the cave and hibernate until spring when they emerge with a new addition, their bear cub. The two bears in turn teach their bear cub how to prepare for hibernation. But for now, the little one curls up in the cave with mom and dad for the winter. The illustrations are done in collage. They are beautiful and interesting. The only negative is at times the illustrations are too dark making it difficult to read the black text. The story is simply told making it appropriate for young children. It is advertized for grades preschool-2. I think a bit younger would be better suited to this simple story--ages 4-7.

The seasons unfold for this lovcely bear family.
Love the illustrations in this book that follow the course of two bears relationship from the time they meet in the forest to when their cub appears. The story follows the seasons and is simply told because the illustrations carry much of the narrative load. That's fine because this is all about the wonderful pictures anyhow. You'll enjoy sharing this picture book with you child or grandchild.Note: You may have to do a little explaining about how two bears go into the cave to spend the winter and three emerge!Book supplied by publisher.

Amazing
My son, who is a very reluctant reader LOVED this book. So much so that I contacted the author to tell her THANK YOU for writing a book that made me believe that my son can definitely enjoy books:) It was such a sweet story and the illustrations were some of the most unique and stunning pictures we've ever seen in children's books. You will absolutely adore this book.

Beautiful, but inaccurate
"Bear Hug" is a beautiful book filled with rich language (reading level grade 3.5). My 8 year-old read it and enjoyed it, and then we had a lengthy discussion about how, although it is a nice fantasy, it is completely inaccurate. Bears are solitary--females raise the cubs alone, hibernate alone, and do not form monogamous family units. I'm choosing not to read it to my preschool-aged children because such a conversation would just be confusing to them. There are so many cute animals that would have been better choices for this book--which is meant to be a bedtime story about seasons, family, and the cycle of life. It's a shame such an opportunity was wasted.

This is such a sweet book. It was recommended to be by a friend for my son who loves books and although he's only 2 he really enjoys it and it's lovely to read to him. The pictures are beautiful and my little one loves spotting all the animals throughout the different seasons which are almost camouflaged at first site.
