It is 12 pieces; 6 mats and 6 coasters. The 14 refers to the dimensions of the placemats - 14" x 9".

Are these made of wood or MDF?

I believe the placemats are made of wood. They stay on my dining table and I can't remember where I put the packaging!

I got these as a present, but I have also had many meals on them. getting invited for dinners, from the person I bought them for. They are stable on the table, and are hardy. They have stood the test of time, IE, hot plates and dishes. Always clean up well, and are showing no signs of wear. I would recommend these table mats, in a house where they would get a lot of use.
