Leaks oil right off the bat.
Very disappointed in this product. It leaks oil internally. I filled it with oil as directed, sat it up and went out to my garage to find a big oil pool. No, it was spilled oil. It didn't come out of the cap. I have had very poor response from Kipor.

Not a sub for Honda or Yamaha.
I've been through 2 of these, in a relatively harsh environment of nearly daily use. As the temperatures rises over 85°F the output decreases and the unit cuts out. Each time it cuts out it becomes weaker. 8 months later the units cut out under the most minor load (60W) of my computer and monitor on a warm day and is dysfunctional on a hot day. Apparently, a thermistor in the inverter gets weak and since the board is epoxy sealed you end up with an $800 paperweight. (a replacement inverter is $450) If it ever gets wet on the top it takes about a week to dry out and start again, so don't expect it to power you through a hurricane. If you need a once and a while emergency genset in a cooler climate, it may be just fine. But you get what you pay for and the better gensets are $200-$300 more. But I understand from a Honda friend their genset gets weaker too in hot weather. The US distributor replaced the first unit 8 months on, and refused to replace the second then gave up the US franchise and doesn't take calls anymore.... guess that says it all.

Gap setting for Spark Plug
I have had a Kipor 2000w generator for many years ago and I did not buy thru Amazon, but I wanted to share what I have found out on my own experiences. My unit has a small leak that seems to be coming from the carb area and trying to get it to start was a b#tch - pulling the rope like 20x then it finally starts. So after struggling all these years with it, I decided to replace the sparkplug and I went and purchase a new one and I asked the auto parts place if they could give me the gap and they had no idea what it was. I searched the net for hours and just could not find the correct gap, but once i was able to figure it out by searching technical manuals that I found on the net - the gap from the factory on the original sparkplug was sub .02, it was so so small. So, I adjusted the gap, put the original sparkplug back in and pulled the rope ONE TIME and the damn generator started - ONE pull !!!! I turned it off, waited a few minutes and pulled again and low and behold it started again on ONE pull each time - I did this many times to make sure.I don't know if this will help you out but here is the gap for the NGK Plug - .024 - .027

Perfect for my needs
I bought my Kipor IG2000 in 2009 but it has the same features as the 2012 model. I suspect the newer models are CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliant meaning the put out less emissions than previous models but otherwise similar.I needed something to power my boat's AC while I was away from the dock and didn't want to pay $9,000 for a built-in marine generator that burns a gallon an hour. This Kipor unit is very similar to the Honda EU2000 but costs hundreds less. They units are so similar that I've heard many of the parts are interchangeable but that might have changed in recent years. Again, my model is 3 years old.Operation of the generator is very simple. You open the valve on the fuel cap, turn the generator to "On", set the choke to "Start", and a few pulls later the generator is running. I start mine with the Eco throttle off and let the generator warm up for a few minutes. When you're done you turn the switch to "Off" and the generator shuts off.The eco option allows the engine to throttle up or down based on the power demands and gives you the quietest operation. Essentially these generators are a 4-stroke lawn mower motor connected to an inverter. The inverter produces clean steady power and throttles the engine up or down based on the demand. This also means if you're really using close to 1600w the engine is going to be running at higher RPM and be louder than if you were just using 800w.In terms of noise the generator is reasonable. I can have it running right next to me and still have a conversation at normal volume. I can't hear the generator running at all over the AC running and its very faint with my baot's cabin door closed. I'd say from the sleeping area to the swim platform where I leave the generator is around 25 feet. The negative is the unit only holds about a gallon of fuel tho there are extended run kits available that allow use of a secondary tank. A gallon will last around 8 hours running a smaller AC unit with Eco on but fuel consumption will vary on whatever load you put on it.With a generator of this size you can run a few small appliances or maybe 1-2 big appliances. So for me I normally just run my boat's AC and the outlets (TV, phone charger, etc). To put it in perspective, a 26' boat normally has a 6500w generator to be able to run most everything at once. Also keep in mind that this generator has 2000w starting power but only 1600w continual. That is plenty of power to run most devices you might need to step up to a larger generator if you have higher power requirements. The only time I've had a problem with this generator was on a Habitat for Humanity site. Generator went into a protection mode (it runs but won't produce power) because someone had attached an extension cord and was trying to run multiple circular saws off it. However, most circular saws use well over 1000w of power.Lastly, maintenance of this generator is fairly simple. There is an access panel to change the spark plug and you can drain the oil by tiling the unit sideways with the oil fill plug open. I always add fuel stabilizer to the gas if the generator is going to sit for a while to avoid gumming up the carburetor.Overall very happy with this unit and its performance. I would recommend it to my friends.

Buy a Powerhouse or Honda!
I was a service center for Kipor generators for 10 years. I have seen the same issues with these generators over and over while Kipor seems to not be interested in resolving. Service centers and parts are a real challenge to find. Do yourself a big favor and get a more durable Powerhouse or a Honda! You will be glad you did!

Greta generator for camping.
We bought this gen in 08 and have use it very year for camping it doesn't run the ac on the trailer but we don't buy it for that. It is quiet and we can use it next to the trailer with very little noise if you want no noise at all run it out 75 feet or so and place it behind a tree. We have used it in the snow to the summer. You can run all night on one tank of gas. The only problem that we have had is the last time out I broke to pull cord on it. I do like to fact that for our men's retreat in the summer I can use the gen for the sound system there is no up and down on the power so it doesn't hurt the sound equipment. Thanks for looking
