Review: Makes you want to hug a sea creature - This is first of the original books that inspired the TV show and it differs slightly to what you get on the show. It is still wonderful, however. Ours is a paperback copy. The resident crew of the Octopod awakens to what appears to be an attack. It is a creature who has mistaken the Octopod as one of its kind, and for whom it is searching. The Octonauts are just the team to help him find what he's looking for. There begins their adventure through the oceans of the Earth. I love how the text and illustrations lie in the same orientation as the compass during the search for the creature's species. Rotating the book, flicking pages back and forth adds interest. The journey is adventurous and fun, and provides ample opportunity to lower or raise your voice as you exclaim, or pretend-cry as you read to your little audience. During the ocean quest there is so much visual detail that you have an opportunity to make up your own search-and-find of sea creatures. Can you find me a walrus, a killer whale, an igloo; how many viking hats can you count? How many tee-pees can you see? (yes, tee-pees). The message at the end has a beautiful double meaning that is good for discussion. Everything about this book is beautiful. The colour illustrations are gorgeous throughout. They have so much detail that you miss some the first time, and pick them up on the second and subsequent readings. There are fictional sea creatures as well as real ones (the TV show focuses on real sea creatures only). And there is a clever play on words in the illustrations that older readers appreciate. Did you see the special message at the bottom of the Dedication page? This book is a winner.
