Red & Green Quilts: 14 Classic Quilts with Enduring Appeal

Lovely quilt designs
I like this book in part because the designs are not just renditions of other designs we often see. It is easy to assume that all red and green quilts have that "Christmas look" to them but that cannot be further from case with the designs in this book. According to the introduction, in the late nineteenth century, red and green quilts were often made for a marriage then another one made when the woman had more leisure time when the children left home. The 14 quilt designs in the book were created by 15 designers. The book images on Amazon are in the order in which they appear in the book. Those pictures don't do the quilts justice. The pictures in the book are gorgeous and the quilting is easily seen. Here's a list of the quilts and their designers:- Theodor's World by Laurie Simpson- Starstruck by Susan Ache- Scrappy Sisters by Lissa Alexander- Holly Berry Baskets by Betsy Chutchian- Winterberries by Jo Morton- Holly Bears the Crown by Sandy Klop- Snow Lilies by Carol Hopkins- Star Frond by Corey Yoder- Heritage Mountain by Sheryl Johnson- Primrose Holly by Lisa Bongean- Home Sweet Home by Pam Buda- Tudor Rose by Karen Styles- Sweet Mint by Edyta Sitar- Christmas Star by Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen RobisonThere are many variances in the quilt designs and the techniques used to make the quilts. For example, Theodor's World has a strip-pieced center using foundation paper. Lisa Bongean's quilt is wool applique on a flannel background. Edyta's quilt includes templates for curved piecing (she says its easy because the curve is large and gentle). The Tudor Rose quilt is entirely applique. Some quilts are solely pieced while others also include applique elements. One of my favorite designs is Holly Berry Baskets. The quilt size is 48.5" x 60.5" but I would love to use this design to make a wall hanging using just five of the baskets with the provided sashing that creates a nine-patch block where the sashings meet...lovely!Each designer provided their preferred piecing and construction instructions. That is, the techniques are not consistent project-to-project throughout the book. Just like always, if you prefer a different technique for making half-square triangles, flying geese, square-in-a-square blocks, or you like a certain method of applique, then substitute your preferred method...or try something new. The book also mentions that you can refer to Martingale's online "How to Quilt" details. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the lightness of the text font. This book is not really appropriate for a beginner quilter. If I were offered do-overs, would I buy this book again? YES.I hope you found this review helpful. Happy quilting.

Nice collection of quilt patterns from several designers
I like finding quilt pattern books to try several different block and quilt designs. It's more affordable than buying individual patterns. Each designer presents their own techniques for completing blocks, which is fun to try.I haven't made any of the quilts from this book yet. Red and green is a color combination I typically only use for Christmas, and don't plan to make anything soon. However, I like having the book as a reference or resource.Currently, I'm trying to learn to get better at circle and curved appliqué, so the quilts that include this technique are interesting to me.

Beautiful Quilts
Really lovely quilts although some of them are quite complex with lots of small piecing pieces, so not suitable for a complete begginer. I madw a sample of the Edyta Sitar block and it went together easily and looks lovely. Lots of useful ideas in here, and just gorgeous to look at.
