Great adaptation of Stephen King’s work. Great coming of age story that shows you are not where you come from.

This is one of my all time favorite films. My mom got it for me as a gift on amazon since I love it and watch it so often. It sticks pretty loyally to the novels the body by Steven king. There is a lot of cursing. The main plot is 4 best friends who lie to their parents and go on an adventure. It’s a coming of age story. The casting is excellent!

Have love this movie for years. Must have for a 80s collection

I've been a Stephen King fan for a very, very long time. I've seen almost all of the film adaptations of his work and I have read all of his novels, short stories and novellas. Some of his works stand out for me more than others. Some of his stories go beyond the gore of horror to have real meaning and the story and its characters stick with you well after the credits roll on the movie or you turn the last page of the book. Stand By Me is one of those works. Simply put, this story is about four young boys who set out on a journey to see the body of a boy who was killed by a train. Sounds pretty basic and run of the mill horror, doesn't it? It is anything but. The journey the four young heroes of the film takes is more than just walking the 20-25 miles to where the body is located. It is a journey of discovery for each one of them. All four boys are flawed in some way. They all have something holding them back and keeping pain in their lives. On the way to find the kid, they find themselves buried beneath those flaws, come to terms with their pain and emerge stronger for it. Chris (River Phoenix) admits to his best friend, Geordie (Wil Wheaton) the truth about what really happened to the milk money that forever labeled him as a "thief". Chris comes from a poor family with a bad reputation so no one even bothered to find out the truth. Geordie finally confronts the death of his beloved brother, the clear favorite of the Lachance boys. Geordie's parents died the day their eldest son did and barely stop to realize they have another son who needs them and that they can draw comfort and strength from the family they have left. Geordie has been the "invisible boy" all his life. Teddy (Cory Feldman) comes from an abusive home but still somehow manages to love his father despite his having burned his sons ear on the stove. Teddy proudly tells anyone who will listen about his father storming the beach at Normandy and Teddy himself wants to demonstrate the same bravery his father did during the war. He craves something he will probably never get: his fathers approval and love. And then there is sweet little Vern (Jerry O'Connell). He's afraid of his own shadow and probably not the brightest bulb in the package. But he has a good heart, knows right from wrong and is a loyal, honest and trusting friend. Vern is the kind of friend that I think every one of us would like to have at some point in our lives. All of these young men are, really. Then there is the other side of the equation. Ace Merrill (Kiefer Sutherland) and his gang. These boys are bad to the core. They do whatever their leader Ace tells them to do and love the reputation they get from it. Two of Ace's gang are the older brothers of Chris and Vern and these two older boys are how the young boys find out about the body. This movie is set in 1959 but it can easily apply to any year, any person, any situation. There isn't a single one of the four main characters that someone cannot identify with. We all have a little bit of Chris, Geordie, Teddy or Vern in us; maybe a little bit of all of them rolled into one person. We're all afraid of something, we've all longed for the acceptance and love that never came, we've all been misunderstood because of something out of our control and we've all pushed emotions down so deep that it has taken something big to force us to deal with them. For every single one of us there is one point in our lives that we can remember with the clarity that the older Geordie (the narrator, Richard Dreyfuss) has of this overnight trip to find Ray Brower. Sometimes it brings us happiness but sometimes it brings us pain (maybe brings us both). This isn't a movie about a dead kid, this is a movie about life. All the ups and the downs, the good and the bad. It shows some things that are uncomfortable to deal with such as child abuse and the loss of a child. It doesn't sugar coat anything or leave you with the impression "this was just some made up junk in a movie". Between Stephen King's writing, Rob Reiner's directing, and the brilliant acting of four extremely talented young men this movie made you feel something. Perhaps it brings back some memories of your own childhood or even makes you think about something happening right now. The cast in this film is remarkable. No better choices could have been made for any role in this film. Each actor brought strength and power to their roles and it's easy to see why all of the main characters (the four boys as well as Ace) are all well-known and easily recognizable names now. You can't help but be moved watching this movie knowing that just like Chris, the amazing River Phoenix left this world much too soon. Unless there are outtakes or bloopers on a disc, I don't buy movies for the extras. I'm just not interested in that kind of thing. I want a quality copy of the title film and that's it. However, this DVD has some very nice special features on it. My favorite is the "Stand by Me" music video. It shows classic footage of the late Ben E. King then moves forward many years and shows him singing the song with a young River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton in the audience. Both young men get up and dance with King. With two of those men not with us anymore, that was a wonderful extra to have on the DVD. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone of any age. Young and old alike can take something good away from this movie and feel better for having watched it.

We purchased this movie in Amazon Prime to watch with my son. Stand by Me is a fun and engaging classic that my son and I thoroughly enjoyed watching together. The story is heartfelt and adventurous, following a group of friends on a memorable journey, and it resonates with both younger and older audiences. The characters are relatable, and the mix of humor, suspense, and life lessons makes it a meaningful viewing experience. It’s a great introduction for kids to classic films that explore friendship, growing up, and the challenges of childhood in an accessible way. Overall, Stand by Me is a timeless movie that’s entertaining, thought-provoking, and perfect for family movie nights. It sparks great conversations while keeping viewers invested in the story from beginning to end.

This movie is a classic. I bought it for my 13 year old daughter. She absolutely loves it!

Something your kids should watch with you. Definitely an great Timepiece.

One of the greatest childhood adventures

Small town Oregon 1959. Four 12 year old boys decide to go in search of the body of a boy their age. They hope to become heroes for finding him, it's a challenge and adventure but also an unspoken pilgrimage of sorts. This is one of those movies where not a lot happens in terms of plot but there's a huge amount actually in it, if that makes any sense. The story is told as the narrated reminiscences of one of the boys, Gordie, as an adult writer. The characters of the boys are really well fleshed out with plenty of back story. Gordie (as a boy) is thoughtful and sensitive. After the death of his older brother, Gordie feels, and is made to feel, inadequate and unwanted. Chris comes from a 'bad' family so is expected to be bad. Under his tough exterior Chris is surely the most diplomatic, kind and empathic teenager one is ever likely to meet. Livewire flamboyant Teddy also has a traumatic back story. Teddy worships his father who 'stormed the beach at Normandy' but was violent to him. Vern is chirpy but nervous and scares easily. Vern overhears about the dead body and sets the boys' adventure in motion. They set out along the railroad tracks and face a series of challenges, sometimes amusing, sometimes terrifying, that gradually bond their friendship. Most important, they get support and encouragement from each other having been let down by parents and teachers, the meaning of the title. Unfortunately the town's older teenage thugs are also on the trail of the dead boy once they get their cars and idle asses in gear. They seem to spend a lot of their days driving around playing mailbox baseball on their ways to collect their social security payments. Basically they're an unpleasant waste of space. Scarily some of these are older brothers of some of the four boys. Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell are amazing, really outstanding as the boys. Astonishing that Jerry O'Connell's chirpy assured performance is his first acting credit. Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix give very convincing, mature performances. Corey Feldman's colourful performance is a joy to watch. Kiefer Sutherland, as the leader of the older gang, is surely the scariest knifewielding 'cheap dime store hood' - great performance. The narration of Richard Dreyfuss adds appropriate dry humour and cynicism. My only reservation about the movie is the liberal use of swearing. Super soundtrack of the era, including such greats as Buddy Holly, used appropriately within the context of the story and photography. Great photography especially in the rural locations and the stunts with the trains. Picture quality is excellent on the DVD but sound level (mono) is too low. There are optional subtitles and a very interesting commentary with director Rob Reiner. There is also a behind the scenes documentary including interviews with Stephen King, whose novella is the basis for the script, and the surviving young stars. In memorium - River Phoenix. A really talented actor who died too young.

Il film è ambientato nell'estate del 1959: Gordon 'Gordie' Lachance, Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp e Vern Tessio sono quattro amici dodicenni che vivono nella piccola cittadina dell'Oregon di Castle Rock, e si preparano a passare al ginnasio. Un giorno Vern, cercando dei soldi che aveva sotterrato, ascolta per caso la conversazione tra suo fratello maggiore Billy e un amico, viene a conoscenza che i due, dopo aver rubato una macchina per fare un giro fuori città, si sono imbattuti casualmente nel cadavere di un ragazzino e non ne hanno denunciato il ritrovamento alla polizia a causa del furto appena commesso. Vern corre a raccontarlo agli amici, i quali capiscono debba trattarsi del corpo di Ray Brower, un dodicenne scomparso tre giorni prima, dopo essersi allontanato da Castle Rock per raccogliere mirtilli. I quattro ragazzi, spinti dal desiderio - ognuno per un motivo diverso - di riscattarsi e diventare degli eroi agli occhi di tutti, decidono di andare alla ricerca del corpo e si mettono in cammino lungo i binari della ferrovia. Alla fine, dopo aver superato mille ostacoli, fra cui anche quello di essersi dovuti scontrare con la banda dei più grandi, capeggiata dallo spietato Asso, trovano il cadavere. Durante il viaggio sono però maturati a tal punto da pensare che una telefonata anonima alla polizia sia la cosa migliore. Molti anni dopo, Gordie, ormai adulto e con figli, coronato il sogno di divenire uno scrittore, apprende da un giornale la notizia della morte di Chris (accoltellato perché aveva cercato di porre fine a una lite). Decide allora di scrivere un nuovo romanzo, in cui narrare la storia del loro viaggio alla ricerca del corpo di Ray Brower. Sua è la voce fuori campo che accompagna lo spettatore per tutto il film. Personaggi Modifica Gordie Lachance Modifica È il protagonista del film, un bambino sensibile, molto intelligente e con un talento nel raccontare storie, che lo porterà a diventare scrittore. Alla morte del fratello maggiore Denny viene ignorato dai genitori, soprattutto dal padre, tanto da pensare che l'uomo avrebbe preferito la sua morte a quella del fratello. È il migliore amico di Chris. Chris Chambers Modifica È il leader del gruppo, nonché il migliore amico di Gordie. I membri della sua famiglia hanno una pessima reputazione e ciò porta gli abitanti di Castle Rock a considerarlo un poco di buono, malgrado non sia affatto tale. Chris si rende conto del dono di Gordie per la scrittura, ma anche di come rischi, a suo dire, di rovinarsi frequentandoli; per questo motivo diventa per lui una sorta di "padre spirituale", pronto a spronarlo a tirare fuori il meglio di sé. Suo fratello è Caramello Chambers, che fa parte della banda dei Cobra. Alla fine del film, ormai adulto e divenuto un ricco e famoso avvocato, si verrà a sapere che morirà accoltellato in un fast-food perché aveva cercato di porre fine a una lite, poiché ha sempre cercato di rimediare a tutto. Teddy Duchamp Modifica È un ragazzo molto eccentrico con dei grossi occhiali da vista neri. Nonostante il padre insano di mente (ex-militare che ha partecipato allo sbarco in Normandia e che è poi stato rinchiuso in una clinica psichiatrica) gli abbia bruciato un orecchio appoggiandolo su una stufa accesa, lui continua a volergli bene e a difenderlo imperterrito da ogni sorta di accusa. Alla fine del film si scopre che ha tentato addirittura di arruolarsi nell'esercito per seguire le orme del padre, ma la vista e l'orecchio non glielo hanno consentito, ritrovandosi così a fare lavoretti saltuari nei dintorni di Castle Rock, finendo diverse volte in prigione. Vern Tessio Modifica È un ragazzo timido molto pauroso e un po' impacciato, spesso preso in giro dagli altri poiché sbadato e in sovrappeso. Ha un fratello maggiore, amico di Caramello Chambers della banda dei Cobra. Da grande lavorerà come manovratore di gru, si sposerà e avrà 4 figli.

I bought this DVD thinking it was the Europe Region version because of the title: Stand by me ( Reino Unido). Reino Unido is United Kingdom which uses the Europe Region version. Besides the film is american, why put UK in the title then? This is intentionally misleading. I only noticed the fact when I tried to watch the movie, which was 2 weeks after I received it, and thus to late to return it. I am very unhappy and will not buy from this seller again.

Un capolavoro degli anni settanta. Non è invecchiato per niente. Interpretazione maiuscola. Tratta con tanta delicatezza un momento cruciale dell'adolescenza, un'esperienza che farà crescere. Le stelle non sono abbastanza perché è un film perfetto.
