i have a NG match light fireplace and was told by my gas company that i needed a safety pilot w/t thermocouple or they will not pipe cai i use this?

I purchased this vavle to go with my Peterson gas logs and installed it myself. Was simple enough, but I am not sure if it would be able to mount under your wood grate and if it would do what you want. You should check with RH Peterson tech support.

Do I leave gas valve open and use this to control gas?

Yes, you can leave the valve open and use the standing pilot. However, you may want to turn it off during warmer months so the pilot doesn't run constantly.

Is there a remote kit available?

No. This valve is not designed for use with a remote control system.

Does the knob on this valve work well enough to shut the line down over super hot long summers or will it need an upstream shutoff?

the knob works well. It doesn't need any other shutoff.
