An invaluable contribution to the subject.
Over twenty years ago, I had the distinct honor of being in two of Dr. LeGates's history classes at Capilano College. Therefore this survey is exactly what I expected it to be: well written and thoroughly researched and documented by a scholar of the highest order. I am certain that it will be considered for years to come as a groundbreaking contribution in the field of Western Feminism and a "must read." However, academic critics need to remember that it is an historical survey in under 500 pages and therefore cannot be entirely comprehensive. And while Dr. LeGates and I do not share the same views vis-a-vis the role of the Catholic Church ( or for that matter, all organized religions), as an oppressive agent of female equality, she presented her arguments logically and convincingly. I hope that in the future Dr. LeGates will provide more detailed accounts of specific experiences as a opposed to writing another survey.

Well Written and Interesting
This is a very well written and very readable academic book. It includes a missing section of history that is often not written about in mainstream history texts. This is a particularly good breadth book and an excellent introduction to students new to the world of feminist histories. I have used this book for TAing a university level course and found that most students enjoyed it and found it accessible. Highly recommended.
