Crown's 3/4" standard Skew Chisel in the Cryo treated version. Turning skews are used for making beads, tapers, v-grooves, and straight cuts. Stained black ash handle is approximately 10" long, and the tool has an overall length of approximately 16-1/2". England About Crown Cryogenic Tools Years ago tool makers discovered the enormous benefits of cryogenically (super-cold) treated tool cutters, especially plane blades. Now this technology has been applied to select Crown Turning Tools to bring a giant leap in turning tool performance. Cryo treating cutting tools alters the crystalline molecular form of key ingredients in the metal. This altered structure helps the metal achieve a vast improvement in wear resistance for longer life and longer edge retention, and a superior feel in use. Review: Very hard steel and well made - I wanted to try Cryogenic steel. I reground the edge to form a curved skew and ran the shank lengthwise on the belt sander to grind a little radius on the side edges.. Easy enough/done deal after slow grinding. It now sports an Alan Lacer style curved cutting edge and a slight radius on the bar stock edges. Seems to be working very well and I expect cutting edge wear to be pretty long wearing. I've now gone through pretty much all my Christmas ornament turnings and used this skew a lot for peeling cuts which is not an easy cut on a cutting edge. It's still peeling ribbons in hard woods, so far I have not even re-honed. I'm well pleased. Shipping was fast, delivery went without a hitch, in fact it came a day early. And now after some time spent in some pretty hard wood no sign of needing a touch up sharpening yet. Review: Worth the cost - This is a really nice skew.
