Success! 20 years of research, experiments and now, melatonin works!
For me that is. 20 years ago I tried melatonin and it didn't work. Discouraged, I went on to other things like hot milk. That didn't work either. It turns out melatonin is synthesized from serotonin. And if you are low on serotonin then of course your melatonin levels will be even lower . For those who may be depressed, low serotonin levels is almost a given. Is it coincidence, that my sleep became much much worse when I became very depressed? So if you're not sleeping well because your serotonin levels are low and you're not producing melatonin. Then using melatonin in pills may help. I had to fix my depression first before the melatonin would really work. There's no research to back this up, but I believe you need both serotonin and melatonin to sleep well . Melatonin to set your circadian rhythm, and serotonin to get you relaxed enough that you can go to sleep. I managed to raise my serotonin levels by taking inositol or vitamin B8. However, tinkering with your serotonin levels is not without danger. You may want to try chamomile tea or lemon balm tea . Dr. Low Dog lectured on these herbs as well . They are excellent for anxiety , the trick is to drink 3 to 4 cups per day every day until they start working. They are safe. There is no record of any safety issue with these in the history of US herbal safety or more importantly European herbal safety . The Europeans used herbs more extensively and have kept better records for much longer But wait, I'm not done yet. There are many other causes of insomnia. I got scientific about it. I attended a lecture by Dr. Low Dog who is an herbalist and an MD, which was aimed at medical doctors who wanted to incorporate herbs in their clinical practice. She explained that night owls have an upside down cortisol pattern. Night owls have low cortisol in the morning and cannot wake up, are groggy and grumpy. Later in the day their cortisol levels rise and continue to rise as the night advances into the wee hours. They are literally too stimulated to sleep. An upside down cortisol pattern, would explain why my body temperature rises as the night advances until by midnight I'm sweating like a pig. Every body else, their body temperature drops as the night advances. So I tried her advice, take 1500 mg of Ashwagandha root powder three or four times a day for four weeks solid. It took me close to seven or eight weeks, but finally I started getting sleepy at night. Since I was still going to bed at 2 AM in the morning, I decided I better try the melatonin again and see if it would work now that the cortisol pattern had been corrected. And it did ! But the melatonin I purchased initially, which was a 10 mg pill, was way too strong. Quite a change from 20 years ago, when swallowing abnormal numbers of pills failed. Took the pill two hours before bedtime. Day one slept 12 hours Days two through four. Slept a short number of hours about six Day five slept closed to 12 hours. Repeat the cycle. After two weeks of trying , I became rather afraid of taking the pill because I might sleep 12 hours. However, the cycles were getting shorter with fewer nights of short sleep. And it was abundantly clear the melatonin was keeping me asleep. I ordered more melatonin in smaller doses, and this is the one that finally worked the best for me. 5 mg quick dissolve will put me to sleep for 12 hours. but I can cut the pill in half and I will sleep only eight hours. Since I have health issues, I like having the larger pill which I can cut to a reasonable size and tune my hours of sleep. The next time, someone says to me "Just go to sleep" I have an awful lot of scalding hot milk that I will suddenly know what to do with. They better like biochemistry. Phooey!

Four Stars
Nice sleep supplement. Works well, but just not in the 20 minutes it claims (at least for me). Has a nice taste and very easy to chew. I usually let it dissolve in my mouth and that seems to do the trick. I've noticed it definitely knocks me out once I do sleep, not to mention I seem to dream a lot more with these, or at least remember them. It's pretty fun to know I will dream when taking these as I typically never seem to remember/dream normally. It doesn't tend to leave me with that woozy feeling as taking regular sleep aids tend to. I have noticed that I'm more tired waking up and somewhat through the day when taking these, though. I don't know if it's just me or what, but I think it has to do with this. It's nothing terribly draining and I can function, nonetheless, but I have felt more tired on days I take them. As long as I'm able to function, I don't mind it too much. All in all, being my first Melatonin supplement ever used, it seems to be pretty good at doing what it's supposed to. Wish it worked a little quicker sometimes, but I'm guessing it varies from person-to-person.

Every night!
For me, 5 mg is what it takes to relax me and help me sleep better. What I like particularly is that this one dissolves. I take a lot of supplements and tire of having to swallow so many capsules. This one is a tasty treat!

So much better than a sleeping pill.
I have always had a hard time falling asleep, even when I was a child. Every night, I played quietly in my room until after dawn because I could not sleep, even when I tried my hardest. I used to get scolded for it. As an adult, things were no different. I tried sleeping pills and while they were able to get me to sleep, they made it impossible for me to wake up, and I was exhausted all day. I also didn't want to build a dependency. I discovered Melatonin, and I was pleased to find that it helped me fall asleep within half an hour or so, without making it hard to wake up. Without medication, I can not fall asleep on my own until I have just completely exhausted myself and can not stay awake any longer. Melatonin tricks my brain into thinking I'm exhausted, and wears of before I wake up! So, I can take it even when I have to be up in a few hours, unlike sleeping pills. The only problem is that by the time I'm so ready for bed that i would need one, I would not feel like getting up, getting the pills, making a glass of water, etc. This chewable version is a lifesaver! I keep them in my bedroom and can use them the instant I think to. I've noticed absolutely no addictive qualities. I only take then a couple nights a week, sometimes less. If anything, it can help you get on a certain sleeping pattern and your body will naturally start to get tired on its own, if you stick to the schedule you create. If having a newborn and never getting sleep at all couldn't help me start falling asleep at night, nothing could. Except Melatonin. And I can take it without worrying that I will be zonked out and sleep though my child waking up. It doesn't put you in a 'coma' like other sleep aids. It just releases the same chemical in your brain as fatigue, and wears of shorty after. For that reason, I don't consider it a sleeping pill, but far superior. So it isn't 100% natural. It's a hell of a lot better than half the stuff we ingest on a regular basis. No, I am not a fan of Aspartame, but this insignificant amount is a small price to pay for a good night's sleep. I more than make up for it by never drinking sodas. And there is a disclaimer on Amazon urging customers to read the full nutritional info beyond what they provide in their descriptions. Would I prefer natural ingredients? Yes. Is this a deal-breaker when the product works? No.
