I'm female with some arthritis in my wrist and thumb. I just need a hammer for fix-em-up jobs in the house. Would the 20 oz be too much for me?

Yes,the 20 oz. With the leather grip WOULD BE TOO MUCH! The 12 oz. Or 16 oz. With the blue cushion grip will do just fine for general fix-it jobs around the house,and be a lot more comfortable! P.S. I have three grown daughters in their thirties, who own homes,and 12 oz. Hammers are all they have ever used.

16 Ounces are the weight of the hammer? or whole weight?

16oz is the head weight which is determined by weighing just the head of the hammer and about two inches of handle.

Does the handle soften over time?

No It really does not soften but for a small amount. The clear coating eventually wears off and the leather handle starts to get a patina from the oils from your hand, ( and dirt). I love these hammers but I'm mostly a trim carpenter. I do not frame.

What kind of clear coat is on the leather?

Don't know. Its durable, though the coating will eventually wear off and the leather will patina.
