Joe Pass -- On Guitar: Book & CD Paperback – November 1, 1996

I love this book! I got it because it goes along with the DVD "Joe Pass: Jazz Lines" So you can watch the video on YouTube and refer to this book for the tablature. More importantly, If you watch the video you get some great instruction, theory and "coaching up" from the maestro himself as you practice the examples. I am an intermediate/advanced guitarist and I admit that I still don't completely understand all of the musical theory involved in jazz guitar. I'm more of a blues/rock/country player. The book explains the theory in which each example is rooted, but better yet each example sounds cool when played. The examples are fun and not insanely hard to play. Unlike many other jazz guitar instruction books this book doesn't assume you are already a jazzbo. Joe Pass said "If you can't remember a jazz line then it's not worth playing in the first place" (or something to that effect). You will remember the jazz lines in this book and be able to create your own. The take away from this book is that you will at the very least be able to walk into a guitar shop pick up a guitar and lay out a few of these sweet riffs. Heads will turn and everyone will think you are a cool jazz guy or girl.

Book incorporates the Jazz Lines (from Joe's video) and a few extras, including CAGED, Left and Right-Hand Technique, Harmonic Families and 3 JP's version of Stella, Joe's Blue, and All the Things You Are, 87 pages in all. I downloaded a pdf with the Video (JP Jazz Lines) from Alfred, however, it is a 50-page pdf, each jazz line (or two) is on separate page, annoying. Alfred's video also annoying - each line in separate video file. So I bought this book, happy I did. For those who don't read music, there is TAB for the examples. Joe's books are practical and cover the essentials. He simplifies chord theory to the three families suggesting that you ignore many of the complexities (extensions/altered chords...) to simplify thinking about improv. I have played the "Major" line examples and the Major Etude and I am happy with the content. Some of the lines are tied to the chords Joe is playing. Joe recommends playing the chord, the line, and then the chord again. For the CAGED system he divides the neck into 3 areas and "plays" all 12 chords in each of the three areas. I also bought Joe's book on Chords, which is very good.

Notated and tabs, Great book with enough jazz ideas to keep you busy for a avery long time. Clear and concise, from one of the greatest guitarists in history.

A good Book to learn great music from a Jazz Guitar Player Fan.

If you are looking for the tab/music to "All the things you are" from Joe Pass Virtuoso CD, don't buy this book. It contains a version of the song but it's nothing at all similar to the Joe Pass version on Virtuoso. The same goes for the two other recordings on the CD. It's in the JP style I guess, but I don't like it. The recording quality is also very poor, which really annoys me. I've already shelved it. Two books where you can't go wrong: The Best of Joe Pass: A Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Styles and Techniques of the Jazz Guitar Virtuoso (Paperback). See Django on youtube. Great intro to the master and it's the master guiding you along hislines, jazz ideas. I learned a number of idioms and lines I could use.

Joe Pass has always been a favorite of mine and I miss this book somehow so I glad to add it to my collection.

Joe Pass ist bekannt für seine wortkargen, aber mit Notenbeispielen überreich gefüllten Lehrmaterialien. Da seit Joes Tod das Interesse an seinem Gitarrenspiel immens gewachsen ist, versuchen viele Bücher, diese Lücke zu füllen. Andere versuchen aber auch nur, Kapital aus dem Ruhm eines Genies zu schlagen. Dieses Buch steht irgendwo in der Mitte zwischen den beiden Extremen. Auf der einen Seite sind die in Noten und auch in Tabulatur dargestellten Lieder eine große Erleichterung für alle, die mit Joes eigenen Büchern so ihre Schwierigkeiten haben, weil diese ausschließlich für notenlesende Gitarristen geschrieben sind. Auf der anderen Seite ist dieses Buch nur eine Zusammenstellung dessen, was Joe in mehreren Lehrvideos schon gesagt hat.Die CD gibt also das wieder, was er auf den Videos vorspielt. Daneben hört man seine Erklärungen, die meist auch ohne Bild verständlich sind. Nur an der einen Stelle, wo ihm der Name des Fingers nicht einfallen will, den er bei den meisten Gitarristen für den schwächsten hält, fehlt das Videobild, wo man hätte sehen können, auf welchen Finger er zeigt.Die erläuternden Texte im Buch sind genauso wortkarg und knapp gehalten, wie man das auch von Joe selbst gewohnt ist. Die Auswahl ist schlau gemacht. Akkorde und dazu passende Skalen werden gemeinsam dargestellt. Höhepunkte sind aber der eingangs gespielte Blues und am Ende die Konzertmitschnitte: 1. All the things you are, 2.Joe‘s Blues, und 3. Stella by starlight, die man nun ohne vorheriges Noten-in-Tabulatur-Übertragen spielen kann. So muss man das Buch unbedingt dafür loben, die Musik von Joe Pass auch dem nur an Tabulatur gewöhnten Gitarristen zu erschließen.Der Titel Joe Pass On Guitar stimmt in beiderlei Sinn: Man hört Joe selbst „an der Gitarre“ und man hört ihn selbst „über sein Gitarrenspiel“ reden. Trotzdem bleibt der fade Nachgeschmack, dass hier letztlich doch nur Material verwendet wird, das auf Video bzw. DVD schon vorher zugänglich war. Dieses Material ist dafür aber durchaus sinnvoll aufgearbeitet und um wertvolle Tabulatur ergänzt, die man anderswo bei Joe vergeblich sucht.
