These struts were about half the price of non-BMW branded OEM and about a fifth the price of the BMW branded struts (per online listings). These have a black strut extension shaft (like OEM) rather than the more typical chrome shaft. Installation is easy if you watch the many YouTube videos out there. The first trick is prying off the clip of the old strut. You need a thin bladed screwdriver to fit under the clip. You do NOT remove the clips on the new strut. The second trick involves the fact that the fully extended strut goes a couple of MM beyond the ball socket wit the trunk fully raised so that the strut will always be under tension. Install the bottom socket first (it will just snap in with little effort). Grab the top end of the strut and pull down while attaching it to the ball socket. With a couple of grunts, it will just snap in. Once in, I found that the struts offered little assistance on the first third of the trunk travel - just releasing the trunk latch will not pop it fully open. At the top third of the trunk travel, however, the assistance was pretty aggressive so the trunk lid will definitely stay up! I've owned this car for 17 years and these were replacing the originals, so I can't recall if this is how it worked when new with gradual deterioration.

These replaced the worn out OEM lift shocks that were making the trunk lid drop like a bag of bricks. Easy to pop on, and put into use. Hard to say how long these will last, hopefully for the decent price they last at least 2-3 years. Trunk now lifts with very little hand assistance, and closes with the same amount of downward pressure as any trunk. Some reviews said it was hard to close trunk lid with new shocks, but they must be weak or never tried a 4Runner rear door (those are pretty tough). Would buy again, but hopefully won't ever have to for a few years.
