A Kids' Guide to Hamilton the Musical

Incredible book! I'm reminded every time my daughter rereads this book, talks about it or displays it in special spot facing out on her bookshelf, that YES I need to write a review. My 10 year old loves this book! The author's writing style makes this book so special. Her creative structure of the book and descriptive, fun details makes it such a wonderful read. I greatly enjoyed reading it with my daughter, discussing the facts and appreciating the way it was written. As a family we were thrilled we could read this book then watch the musical at home, even watching it play & pause style because our daughter couldn't wait to first learn about the songs and then watch. Her favorite parts of the book include the "rules for a duel" details, the footnotes and sidebars. The "who's who" section and glossary are so helpful for those learning the people and terms. The writing style is informative and fun with a very thoughful, creative structure and great illustrations that suppport the text. I am beyond grateful the author chose to write this book as it has brought so much excitement, knowledge and joy for reading & learning about history. It sparked my daughter's interest in historical events and she continues to ask for more "books like this!" I would recommend this book for multiple ages as even our six year old enjoyed listening and asking questions. It would also make for an excellent guide in school for older ages with each student receiving a copy if a class is studying or watching the musical. As adults we loved it & as parents to see this book spark such joy in our children we couldn't be happier! Definitely worth it to purchase and have in your book collection. It's makes for a great reread, sparks discussions and one I think others will truly cherish like we have!

Purchased for my 9 year old Grandson who is a big fan of the musical. He read the book in a few days and really enjoyed it in preparation for attending the musical. Great background and preparation for anyone at any age.

I couldn’t be more thrilled w/this book for my 10 yo. She is the type of kid that is asking questions “Nonstop!” throughout movies, so I told her I wouldn’t take her to see Ham until she read this book. She found the book interesting and was eager to keep reading and I am blown away by not only how well it explains the story, but that she makes footnotes and vocabulary definitions. The chapters are short giving my daughter a sense of accomplishment and mirror right along w/each song. The only criticism is that it is extraordinarily hard to read and not sing alongside! But I do play each song after she reads the chapters to allow her to relate and be able to make the connection of what she read to the portrayal. Highly highly recommend. Superbly done.

I got this for my 10 year old, Hamilton obsessed daughter. She adores the musical but can’t put it into historical context and sometimes misses important bits of information. Not only does she have a song-by-song reference guide to what is happening, but she knows what parts are factual, what happened but at a different time, and what is artistic license. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone with a little Ham fan who wants to know more. I couldn’t have found a more perfect book for my daughter! PS-The topic of Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds is handled sensitively and without too much information. I love that the author gave a correct yet age-appropriate explanation of an affair and notes that grown-ups may want to discuss this more-or not.

My granddaughter is reading this and is enjoying it. We're going to see Hamilton soon and she's getting more excited as she learns more about the story. Great for 10+ kids.

I got this for my mother and law and I to read before seeing Hamilton. No we are not children but, I just wanted to quick read on the background of the musical and this was great. I was worried that she wouldn't be able to follow along with all the fast paced music and whispered to each other several times during the show how helpful this book was. It took me about 3 hours to read and was actually way more interesting than I thought it would be!

My 9 year old daughter and I are avid Hamilton fans. I originally bought this book for her. We read it and loved it - it helped me explain some of the bigger historical events in simple kid language. My sister recently bought tickets for my parents to see the show. They are 75 and don’t listen to any hip hop or rap, let alone any Hamilton songs. I wanted them to get as much as they could out of the show so I sent them this book. They both read it and loved it. They are excited to see the show in a week. They have been raving about it. Great work!

My 9yo daughter loves this book! She read it to get background on the musical before we watch it together. After completing the book she has enjoyed going back and reading through several parts of the book. Highly recommend!
