Four: A Divergent Collection

There are four short main stories; The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son and The Traitor in this book which run just before Divergent and alongside Divergent told from Four's point of view so if you are wondering when you can read these stories without ruining the main trilogy of books for yourself then you will be fine to read this book once you have finished reading Divergent. There are also three very short stories at the end of this book too; "First Jumper - Tris!", "Careful Tris" and "You Look Good, Tris" which are a few pages long each but are a nice addition to the book and again we get to see Four's point of view in a few of the parts from Divergent. I would have preferred to have read this book straight after Divergent if I had known it could be read then but I didn't and read this after the final book Allegiant. I would definitely recommend reading it earlier as it does add to the content of Divergent and I was a bit disappointed with the ending of Allegiant so I feel the shine was taken off this set of mini stories for me by the time I read it but I love the character Four and these stories are really interesting to read. The Transfer tells the story of Four's own decision to leave Abnegation and you will already know the reasons why if you have read Divergent but it is really interesting to see how it all actually played out for Four and get a more in depth insight into what his life was like before Dauntless along with his own thoughts and feelings. We also meet Amar and learn how Four was given the name Four by him. A good short story and a nice insight in Four's life before Dauntless and Tris. The Initiate tells the story of Four's own initiation into Dauntless and how the initiation process was before it was changed when Tris joins Dauntless later on. I loved where Four plays Dare and becomes friends with Zeke and Shauna along with Amar. We also meet a bit more of Lauren who is the Dauntless born trainer when Four is the transfer trainer later on. The rivalry between Eric and Four is also explored a lot more and we find out why. We also learn of the circumstances surrounding Amar's death and how Four narrowly escaped the same fate. A really good short story which I really enjoyed and revealed more information about parts I already knew along with others I didn't. A really good read for fans of the Divergent series. The Son tells how Four discovered his mother wasn't dead and how he was lied to by his Father and the Abnegation about her. It also tells how Max originally wanted him for Eric's job and how Janine already had her claws into the Dauntless at that point. We read how Four starts to investigate what is going on between Max and Janine and how the Dauntless initiation process is changed from her inside mole Eric which later affects Tris' own initiation. We also hear how Four gets his tattoo with the different factions symbols on him. A really good insight into the Erudite interventions in Dauntless and how the pieces of the puzzle started to click together for Four along with his thoughts and feelings on discovering his mother is actually alive. The Traitor gives Four's side of the visiting day meeting with Tris and her Mum and also shows him further investigating Max and Janine's involvement together. It tells how much Four actually helped Tris along with her initiation and how he protected her from being discovered as being a Divergent. It also tells how he continued to try to have the initiation reversed to the old ways before Eric's 'amazing' idea of only letting the top 10 initiates remain and how he tried to warn Abnegation of the attack to come along with his mother who both chose to ignore the information. We also see Tris' rescue from the Chasm from Four's point of view and have an inside sight into his developing feelings for her. I really enjoyed this story and yes I already knew pretty much all of it but again to have everything from Four's point of view was such a good read and very insightful. A really good compilation of short stories which may be re-telling a lot of information already known from reading Divergent but are definitely worth a read to get Four's perspective on things along with additional parts that enhance the main trilogy. A definite must read for fans of the Divergent series.

First thanks to Amazon for sending two bookmarks along with the book. And the packaging was great. Now about the book. I read the Divergent trilogy and I must say that the first book was superbly written, the reason I fall in love with Veronica Roth. But Insurgent and Allegiant ruined my expectations. But Four is again superbly written, the Four's POV was touching. Loved the world building and I would say it's the best book in the series.

'A y est, enfin ! Four: A Divergent Collection est arrivé. Je l'avais pré-commandé pensant l'avoir dès sa sortie (8 juillet) comme c'était le cas pour les tomes de HPotter et j'avoue avoir été déçue par 2 choses : la 1ère est qu'il n'est arrivé que 15 jours après et la 2nde est que, bien que le prix ait baissé en cours de route, je l'ai quand même payé au prix qu'il avait lors de la pré-commande. Du coup, ici plus-value de la pré-commande : zéro ! Sans doute à cause de la législation autour des livres qui s'est durcie pour contrer Amazon mais je pensais naïvement que ça n'impactait que les livres français et non les livres étrangers... Bref ! J'ai enfin pu lire ce livre tant attendu... et je n'ai pas été déçue ! Il devient mon préféré de la série ex-æquo avec "Divergent". Les 3 premières nouvelles sont passionnantes et tiennent toutes leurs promesses en nous aidant à mieux comprendre comment l'enfant meurtri et battu s'est transformé en un jeune homme fort, charismatique et intimidant aux yeux de beaucoup. Les allusions disséminées ça et là dans les 3 tomes originels sont parfaitement reliées ici. Et j'y ai retrouvé le personnage que j'avais cerné dès le début : l'incarnation parfaite du "divergent", celui qui ne rentre dans aucune case car il est trop multiple et complexe et libre pensant. Cet être qui, en dépit des apparences, est plus qu'un audacieux, plus qu'un altruiste, plus que tout. A bien des égards, je le trouvais plus divergent que Tris et cette série de nouvelles confirme cette impression. [**petit spoiler Allegiant**] Aussi suis-je encore plus frustrée par la révélation sur lui dans "Allegiant" ! ça ne colle pas ! Ou alors, ça peut coller si on arrive à expliquer cette "anomalie" dont nous parle Matthew mais le livre ne nous fournit jamais une réelle explication. Perso, j'en ai trouvé une. Une, qui expliquerait l' "anomalie" de Tobias comme la "super" divergence de Tris et je pense sincèrement que Veronica Roth a matière à écrire une suite à "Allegiant" (une suite où même Tris aurait sa place, si si, croyez-moi, c'est tout à fait possible !) [/ **petit spoiler Allegiant**] La 4e nouvelle "The Traitor", se passant chronologiquement en même temps que "Divergent", est plus longue bien qu'elle apporte moins de révélations. Toutefois, c'est super de voir certaines scènes clés du premier roman racontées ici, du point de vue de Tobias. Malheureusement, c'est aussi la nouvelle la plus frustrante car elle commence un peu au milieu de nulle part et se finit de la même façon. Perso, je l'ai lu en parallèle aux 3 scènes exclusives présentes à la fin du recueil (les 2 premières se situant chronologiquement avant le début de "The Traitor" et la 3e entre 2 scènes) car la nouvelle fait parfois allusion à des choses introduites dans ces 3 scènes. Mis à part ça, c'est intéressant de voir comment Tobias en est venu à soupçonner un complot fomenté par les érudits (Jeanine) et les audacieux (Max) et la lumière est enfin faite sur les circonstances de l'arrivée d'Eric au sein des leaders de la faction. Certains personnages trop peu esquissés dans les 3 romans gagnent en profondeur grâce à ce recueil. Ainsi, on y découvre : - l'amitié qui a toujours existé entre Tobias et Tori (amitié à peine mentionnée par Tobias dans le tome 3, Tori est pourtant l'une des rares à connaître tous ses secrets), - combien Shauna a été une amie proche au moins au même titre que Zeke, - comment Max a toujours montré plus d'intérêts pour lui que pour Eric - comment Amar s'est révélé être un vrai mentor, un protecteur. Ce serait en tout point parfait, toutefois, sans cette erreur grossière qui m'a choquée (issue de "Careful, Tris" mais pas rectifiée dans "The Traitor") : et Myra ??? Four n'avait pas 8 initiés mais 9 !! La petite amie d'Edward a simplement été effacée de cette version de l'histoire ! Comment est-ce possible ? Comment Veronica a-t-elle pu zapper un de ses personnages comme ça ? Certes, Myra faisait surtout office de figurante, mais elle a quand même été l'une des opposantes de Tris lors des évaluations physiques... ça me semble une erreur qu'il aurait été si simple d'éviter... Enfin bref, ça reste un recueil à dévorer de bout en bout. Je ferai juste un bémol, une déception. A la fin de mon tome d'Allegiant, une pub annonçait la parution prochaine de ce recueil de nouvelles et parlait non pas de 4 mais 5 "short stories", la dernière étant "Free Four". Ne retrouvant pas cette histoire dans mon recueil, j'ai investigué pour découvrir que "Free Four" était en fait une scène (du même genre que les 3 exclusives en fin du recueil?) qui racontait l'épisode du lancé de couteaux du point de vue de Four. Où se trouve cette scène ??? Pourquoi ne pas l'y avoir inclue comme annoncée ?? Me voilà frustrée de découvrir qu'il existe encore un écrit sur l'univers de Divergent que je n'ai pas !

I love this book because it offers an exciting different point of view from the rest of the divergent collection. I could not put this book down, it had me hooked from the first page. The plot twists were not expected and over all it is a great short novel. Written by my 13 yr old daughter:)
