This is a best surprise ever
I only order the book because husband found it in a book shop and said it might be a good bed time read with daughter, who is 8 likes good adventure and a story with proper story line. This book turns out to be the best surprise ever, we just LOVE it! We had so many lovely evening reading together. Once we started we didn't want to stop, I would recommend any day.

The illustrations are a missed opportunity
The author gives an enjoyable account of some of the popular norse myths but I don't think that the illustrator adds anything much. I'm not a fan of the blocky, silhouette-like style. It is so minimalistic that it doesn't add more than the words have already said. For example, the words might tell us that Freyja is the most beautiful of all but how can a low-resolution, monochrome image reflect the words let alone add to them? Just as with beauty, the same can be said of mischeivousness or grotesqueness or anything else communicated in such tales. I'm not saying that the artist is without talent, no, not at all, just that his style of artwork doesn't, in my opinion, enhance the storytelling. That's a shame because, at their best, the storyteller and the illustrator can be so much greater than the sum of their parts.

Beautiful book, wonderfully well written
I bought this to read to my class, as they know nothing about the Norse myths. It's great for reading aloud - gripping and full of powerful imagery. The illustrations are gorgeous. Recommended.
