Just curious. How dark does this dye actually get? Is it even remotely close to black?

It's not black. It's dark gray on white items. After reading some of the comments, I wondered if anyone remembered the color wheel. If you "overdye" you won't get dark gray. You will get a hint of the fabrics original color with the dye. I dyed a green & white plaid shirt - 60% cotton 40% polyester. I got dark gray and brown. This was perfectly fine, because I was pairing with tan dockers. I would like RIT to make a gothic black though! Die color wheel die! lol I "cook" my items for two days. Polyester is not true fabric. It will resist you to madness. Keep it hot. I buy a slightly bigger size for expected shrinkage. Then I have a dryer for dyed items. The package says 30 minutes, but that has always failed me.

Is "graphite" the new black?

According to RIT website. 2.5 cups Graphite 1/4 cup Racing Red 2 tablespoons Sapphire Blue 3 gallons Water Makes BLACK

I want to dye a medium gray unitard into a darker shade. Will this work?

I have a gray polyester backpack I was dying for my child for back to school. She wanted to dye it black and design it her own way so I went a bought dye and color stay. It did not work for me personally I wash doing the instructions and it wasnt work all the dye just wash out AND! I actually left it sit over night because during the day (4) it wasnt doing anything so I decided to leave it over night it hopes at least the flowers were gone. They werent the backpack is still grey with flowers. I do not recommend for grey items

I have a neon greenish yellow hooded sweatshirt to dye. Will this work and turn it dark grey? If not,which color,and how many bottles? Sweater-Xl mens

It will not work I used two bottles to dye a pair of culottes from light grey to black and I used two bottles and it turned my culottes into a blueish grey ugly color. Do not buy this product as I found it did not work.
