Bought this to test my multi-region DVD player
I recently got a multi-region DVD player for the first time because there's some box sets that I can only get from Region 1, and I needed to get a cheap DVD to test if it worked. I do already like Total Recall and I don't currently have this in my collection anyway. It's a good DVD, plays well and I'm happy with the order which arrived on time.

Doesn't work
None of the disks work and because I didn't test it until after 30 days, Amazon won't do anything.

We originally had this movie on VHS, and I had to break down and buy a replacement DVD. This is a favorite movie in our house. The only thing that might have kept it from being 5 stars is the scene near the end where Quaid and Malina are blown outside while the alien machine starts working. Their eyes bug out, their heads swell up, veins pop. And then when the oxygen is made, they both go back to normal with no damage. Even young kids know it's silly. However, I so like the movie, the theme of fighting against a despotic overlord, the theme of just what is reality, and the just general action-packed story, that I can overlook that doofus ending. And I wasn't bothered by any special effects either, I thought most of them were really top-notch. Heck, I'm a fan of Classic Doctor Who and if you want to see cheesy special effects you need go no further than that. Some of the "Total Recall" special effects are fabulous and the Mars-scape, all modeling, is supurb. The taxi "driver" might not have turned out the way they wanted it to, but I think it's hilarious. Here's the extras on this DVD: 1. "Imagining Total Recall". A great documentary with interview clips of Ron Shusett (co-screenwriter), Paul Verhueven (director), Arnold Schwarzenegger (played Quaid), William Sandell (production design), Frank Urioste (editor), Eric Brevig (visual effects supervisor), Rachel Ticotin (played Melina, interview from 1989), Sharon Stone (played Lori, interview from 1989), Tim McGovern (special visual effects), Rob Bottin (special make-up & effects, interview from 1989), Jerry Goldsmith (composer) and Gary Goldman (co-screenwriter). 2. Rekall Virtual Vacations. This is just three stills with moving clouds, etc., of three different scenes. 3. "Visions of Mars" Interview with Dan McCleese, Chief Scientist, Mars Program, Jet Propulsion Laboratories. 4. Storyboarding Comparisons 5. Conceptual Art Gallery 6. Theatrical Trailer & TV Spots 7. Photo Gallery 8. Production Notes 9. Cast & Crew Information I much enjoyed "Imaging Total Recall". Ron Shusett explains how he optioned the story in 1974, long before Philip K. Dick was well-known. The 1st line of the story is: "He awoke - and wanted Mars." Just how the movie starts! The writers did an excellent job of expanding that 23-page story into a full-length movie. In the original story, Quaid was a Dagwood Bumstead timid accountant type, but Arnold Schwarzenegger really wanted to play in the movie. When you add Verhueven, known for more violent action films, Arnold makes a lot more sense. The movie's outside scenes were filmed in Mexico City, Mexico, and the smog was so bad that they actually had to play scenes keeping it in mind. You just couldn't run very far in the foul air. "Total Recall" won a "Special Achievement Academy Award" for it's visual effects, so this movie was at the forefront of what could be done in 2000-2001. Happy Reader

One of scharzenneger's best movies.By the way if you haven't seen the remake with Colin Farrell check it out it's actually pretty good on its own too.I mean don't get me wrong the remake is no classic like the schwarzenneger version and the remake isn't very special like it either. Its a bit bland and generic a bit as an action movie. But because its built around the same amazing fascinating story it works. It's also action pack and has great special effects.K now that i am done selling the remake lol.No but seriously i'm not usually big on remakes but i did enjoy that version too.K now back to the one and only Total Recall. The 1990 version directed by Paul Verhoven. You see this is one of the things that makes this version so special. It has the Verhoven touch. If you seen Robocop directed by him (and who hasnt?) then you know what style this version of Total Recall will have.Total Recall is full of gratuitous graphic over the top violence. This is probably the type of movie that wouldnt be made today in our politically correct world. It also has that satyrical tone that robocop was famous for.Another thing that makes this movie special and a classic is the score by the late great composer Jerry Goldsmith wich is one of the best movie scores ever created for a movie.Every scene in the movie is elevated with this amazing perfect score that brings out so much to every scene. Its just hands down a brilliant score for such a hard core action movie.Another classic thing about the movie is all the one liners said by Arnold or others throughout the movie. One thing that the remake doesnt do compare to this version is having the movie actually take place on the red planet. In the remake you never see any sight of orange landscape. In this version there is lots of orange in the landscape wich is needed for a movie who takes place on mars.I remember in 1990 when i first saw the movie i didnt fall for it as much as most people right away.I remember liking the other schwarzenegger movies like predator and commando a lot more.I dont know what it was that didnt grab me right away about it but i must admit now it is one of his best and its a great sci fi action flick and a classic of the past.I had the vhs and the dvd years ago and now we get this 4k transfer with a bluray combo.I can't comment on the 4k cause i dont have a player to watch it.I bought this especially for the remastered bluray.Yes the bluray on this is not an old transfer. Its a brand new bluray that was struck from the new restoration made for the 4k disc. And yes it looks fantastic.I am happy to say that its a great transfer.Just like what you want a transfer for an old action movie from the 90's to look like on bluray.Just like the new bluray transfers they made for the old star trek movies the film grain is retain and no DNR is used this time.I heard some people complain about the total recall transfer but for me it looks amazing and perfect the first time i viewed it.I love it when the grain structure is retained and pleasant looking and here thats how it is.Like the star trek movies transfer. The audio is good too.Its probably not as good as modern movies but i think the remastered audio probably sounds better a bit than before. The extras are good and it think you get most of the ones that were made.So if you like total recall get this 4k combo now.
