Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie (425g) - Pack of 2

For what this is, it tasted good. I wasn't expecting anything impressive and I didn't grow up in England/didn't grow up with this as a food item. I learned about them from a video online and I knew what to expect. However, I did love the crust on the pie. I read the reviews and baked it on a lower temp for a longer time and it came out perfectly. Definitely put a cookie sheet under it. It had a gelation texture which is a big complaint, but again, didn't bother me because that's the texture you get with cooked meat. The biggest complaint I read was the kidney bits... again, small bits, but it's an acceptable amount. Overall it was good, I will probably order it again.

Yum! Just like we ate in England. The problem was it arrived frozen solid as it was Minnesota in winter. So, I refrigerated and ate both within 2 weeks. Please put a label on that it is for and needs to be hand delivered.

This is a pie I used to enjoy when I lived in England. But this bears no resemblance to the Fray Bentos pie of old. At $12.48 each pie, these are super pricy for a pie in a can but I wanted to treat myself. I was terrible disappointed by the taste and texture. It was tasteless. I bought two and am stuck with the second pie. It's not eligible for return.

Son in law is from England and loves these. Reminds him of home- lives in USA now.

I really enjoyed eating these pies when I lived in Australia. The ones I bought there were larger than these. the pies are good, but the crust was soggy. I guess from being jarred in shipping. They did not have asa much meqt in them as the ones I was used to eat. A bit dissapointed with the pies.

Disappointing. I had fond memories of these steak and kidney pies from decades ago, but found the modern iteration didn't live up to what I recalled. The pies had no bottom crust, the meat was skimpy and I saw no evidence of kidneys anywhere. The gravy was tasty and some of the crust suitably flaky but the serving portion was small - even with added veggies, one pie made an unsatisfactory meal for two. I'll stay with the memories and forget this item.

I had these pies often as a young person. My dad was British, so it was fairly common. And it was available for purchase in the US at the grocery store. I haven't had it for several years though, and I found it online so I tried it. Far more expensive, as it wasn't considered a high price food when I was young. I was disappointed in the overall quality, the quantity of the actual meat - although what I could find was really good. Unfortunately, the pastry was like sludge under the top crust, which was great. I have one more pie, as this was a 2 pie order, and I'll follow the advice of another reviewer and cook it longer at a lower temperature to hopefully cook some of the sludge. I doubt I'll buy it again, as the cost just doesn't justify the small amount of meat.

I may not be British but my husband is and I love these pies. They taste great and are definitely a comfort food for me. The only thing I dislike about them is how much they cost stateside, but for me its worth it.
