Q: Can anyone compare this to Moon Sand? Is it the same as Moon Sand?

Moon Sand is the home version. See youtube for videos on how to make this. It does not have the textual pleasantness of the real thing is quite a bit messier and dries out over a week or so. Of the couple of different recipes, avoid the one with baby oil.

Q: how much should I buy a 5 year old?

I would say one box per child is sufficient. I have 4 children ages 5,3, 2, and 2 and they all have their own box to play with. It's really and awesome molding toy. As a mom, I like kinetic sand so much better than PlayDoh. Kinetic sand doesn't dry out like PD and it doesn't stick to anything and everything like PD does. Such a fun sensory toy for kids of all ages. My husband even thinks it's pretty great :-)

Q: Is one box going to be enough sand for a child to play with?

My grandson uses it like play dough, making blocks for castles & houses. He also uses molds to make animals. It's been enough for him to play at his table indoors. The best part is that cleaning up is a snap since the sand sticks to itself. For my 5-year-old it's enough. The problems start when the grown-ups want to play too ;)
