Does it have a battery in case of power failure to keep time?

It does not. It has a permanent energy storage device (assuming it is a SuperCap or something like that) that provides power for 10 minutes to keep time through brownouts. All settings other than the current time are stored in flash memory so they are permanently retained (alarm times, radio memory, etc.). The lack of a long-term battery may be a disadvantage for some people. For me, it seems like in my locale all we have are brownouts or very long outages, so the back-up batteries in most clocks aren't that useful to me, and you need to replace them every now and then. None of the clocks we have with batteries will actually alarm when the power is out, they just keep time. The power needs to come back on before the set time to get the alarm, which is seldom the case in a long outage.

Can the alarm time be turned back, or only forward? That is, to change from 8:00am to 7:45am, do you have to push the button once for hour and 45 times for minutes?

Hours and minutes are set separately. If you are in the hour formatting phase, you cannot change the minutes. They must be set separately, using the same method/formats. To set TIME, press alarm button, press time set till you hear a beep, press tuning up or down to set the hour, THEN PRESS TIME SET AGAIN to set the minutes, and the minute digit will flash. Follow the same direction to set the minutes. Continue the same steps to select weekday/weekend alarms. You continue this process, starting with TIME SET, to select frequencies, bands, and type of alarm (radio/buzzer). When you have finished these settings, within 30 seconds all settings will completed automatically While you are pressing the button t select date and time, the increment comes in hours and minute intervals only.You should have a users manual with this information (page 7). If you don't have a manual, try calling Sangean (800-426-6027).

Yes, iit does work. It has digital tuning so you stay on the station. I know what you mean with the other "dial" tuning radios, waking up to static or no sound at all. I've never had a problem with tuning.

How adjustable is the backlight adjustment? Can the backlight be turned off?

It's very adjustable and can be made very dim, but you can't turn it off. There is an adjustment screw on the bottom that's easy to access. However, if the backlight is dim, it becomes very difficult to read the clock, particularly at night.
