Hmm... frustrating.
It’s not easy to find a good book whereas the author isn’t as biased. According to Josephine McCarthy, there is no such thing as “inner power” or internal capabilities; there’s only external forces that basically control, and assist all beings in life etc. and she boldly (and with conviction in the print) states that. I was a little put off by it, but I continued reading... most of her modalities are stemmed from chaotic, and Ancestral practices, which are better left to the professionals. During her section on “power weaving” she begins with an introduction, then pauses and states that she’ll not go into detail because it was already explained in another book of hers. WTF? My overall impression of this author is that she’s just a sassy middle-aged lass with a big head.

Just buy it.
If you are wise, this will be in your collection. If you are very wise, you will make a point of reading it annually. This may seem off-topic but humor me and read on. Once on NPR I heard a review (likely Michael Silverblatt) of Rickki Ducornet's The Fountains of Neptune. (Not an easy read, btw.) It was discussed how unusual it was that it got published, and how Oprah's then Book Club (while having benefits to literacy) had a shadow side to the community. Everything had to be f-ing feel-good. They discussed the many authors who got very upset when their books were chosen as while in the short-hand it may make them money it was becoming a stain on an author's reputation. Most memorably, they stated that in "today's" publishing world Catch-22, Animal House, etc. would not be published. That scared me and it disgusts me today to think of all the novels I didn't get to read, and still won't. From a little toe-dipping on the net I've read things such as Josephine M. isn't nice, she's arrogant, etc. Hmm. This kind of pisses me off. I think things such as, how would we really know, we're not her friends or family. And, why does it matter anyway. And, maybe she has a reason not to be, if she's not, when she's not, like every human being. She doesn't work at Forever 21 or Disneyland, she's walking a very fulfilling but VERY difficult path. If your in the ER do you want the sweet nurse with the flowery perfume, budding youth, who coddles and purrs but it takes her 20 tries to get your IV in the vein? Or do you want the nurse who get it in the first time (sparing you the worst bruise of your life) and who isn't afraid to tell the doctor where to stick-it, if the doctor's about to accidentally kill you? Which one? Pick now! If you want the latter, this is the book for you. But, I will add. I am about as demonstratively American as they come, complete with the hugs and XO's at the footer of my emails. I don't need people to be like me to understand them, respect them, like them, care about them, appreciate them or READ them. How boring. I know she has a heart, I know she's kind and I really do know that she IS in fact generous. But it's not her MO to be this way by blowing kisses.

I love everything about this book...
Clearly and concisely written, and full of sage advice, this is brilliant piece of work. Its a bit like having an aunt who will call your bulls*** when you need it and give you tips and tricks that can save both your sanity and your time. Some I've figured out by trial and error, some I've found after laborious searching, but the way McCarthy explains it all and weaves together the different strands of information makes for an end product far greater than the sum of its parts. And having it all laid out at once, and in such an articulate manner, is very welcome indeed. As a natural magician, I could been saved a lot of grief and illness had I known even a small percentage of the wisdom shared in this book. As added bonus, the Kindle addition is very nicely formatted. Lovely work, it made my week...

Essential reference for magical people
I've read some of Josephine McCarthy's writings online, but this was the first book I've purchased so far (there will be more). This book is definitely going on my reference shelf to stay. As is typical of McCarthy's writing, there is just a huge amount of useful information delivered in a succinct, no-nonsense, down to earth style. When you understand the (sometimes negative) effect magic can have on your body and why it happens, you have only to learn some basic techniques to begin taking charge of your health. This is not to say it's easy, necessarily--but it is pretty simple. You will NOT find "cookbook" style spells that sound cute but don't explain why or how they are supposed to work, or worse yet seem to be designed to just make you feel clever and pretty. You will NOT need a fancypants altar or a bunch of tools. Instead you will find a variety of tarot spreads with a real life example to guide you in interpreting them; recommendations for complementary therapies including homeopathy and herbs, among others; and most importantly, visionary magic techniques. My favorite thing about McCarthy's presentation of magic is that she boils it down to the essentials, without any pompous fol-de-rol or attempts to scare the reader. It seems to occupy the space in between esoteric ceremonial magic and the more earthy practices of witchcraft, which I personally adore. For years I steered clear of magic because I couldn't find anyone taking this kind of approach. The methods in the book are as appropriate for relative beginners as for more advanced practitioners. If you haven't taken a magical hit yet, get this book so you can avoid it; if you have, then you probably already know you need a book like this.

Helpful to Lightworkers & Magicians
My specialty is Light work / Energy work with the inner Earth, and I found the author's information and experiences with the 4 Directions, and the energies of storms, really worth reading. Magic work is more common in Britain than the states, but she's lived many years in both. As a west coast American this was still relevant content. Will keep this on my shelf.

Another winner from Josephine McCarthy. A support system for those of us who wish to work magically yet also have genetic health conditions to deal with. And for the rest of you as well ;-)

Excelent book, have not finished it yet but have already had so much understanding of my physical reactions that occur at times when doing a lot of energy work. I at times thought I was doing something wrong but this book has helped me to accept stuff and not doubt my processes. Great book....thanksI am the author of Awaken Your Ancient DNA
