A Long Ago Favorite With My Sons!!
My boys were fairly young when we started reading this together, but they loved the humor and the counting. They couldn't read, but knew all the words by memory (this was in pre school)When it comes to the "Punch Line", they shouted it out loud, and we all said the last part together, then had to read it at least 2 more times. It didn't win any prizes, and it's very hard to find, but it's worth the search!!

Love it!
You can't go wrong with Pat Hutchins! Such a fun book for your little one to spot the animals that the hunter doesn't see.

Perfect for Kindergarten and below
Perfect for Kindergarten and below. Has a sing song beat and is wonderful for introducing rhymes. Teachers can use the format to extend a lesson on rhymes by having the children make booklets. They enjoy finding more outrageous places to put animals

1 hunter
I read this book to my cousin's children ranging in age from 4-7. We all had fun guessing what the animals hiding in the background would be once we turned the page. The illustrations were great, they were very colorful and the numbers are large. All of the children's favorite part was the hunter running away from so many animals! I liked that it allowed me to include the group by having them count to the next number and then guessing what the animal would be. I also liked that at the end of the story we counted backwards to show that numbers aren't always presented lowest to highest. The book was best for the younger kids but the older kids liked it as well.

Great especially if you've recently visited a zoo
My 2.5 year old really got into the spirit of counting and numbers with this book. Especially great if your child likes finding hidden things like in the I-Spy books, or just peek-a-boo type of games. My daughter started asking for this book (which was already one of her second tier favorites) every night (thus elevating it to first tier) after our visit to SF zoo. I have difficulty explaining to her what a hunter is; not that that is central to the plot. We just laugh at the end when he is totally surprised and shocked to see all these animals following him all this time, and his glasses and his rifle fall from his hands and he is running for dear life! We are fans of all the Pat Hutchins books.

Great book for children!
This book is a fun way to practice counting. Pat Hutchins has a very clever style of illustrating that both children and adults will enjoy. Each page is vey colourful, with animals cleverly concealed yet easy for children to find.As the hunter stalks the jungle looking for prey, children will enjoy out smarting him to find the animals first. A great book with a clever ending.
