great little unit
Good quality. It's nice to have 5 bays when most similar units only have 4, and at an unbeatable price. I had no issues with both 3.5" SATA drives and 2.5" SSD, although a 2.5 to 3.5 tray converter was needed (ordered separately) for a few extra bucks (as expected). Thunderbolt connectivity works flawlessly. I used Mac's Disk Utility to set up RAID-1 for the SATA drives and it works well. I use rsync via cron to backup the SSD to SATA instead, which also works flawlessly. My mac never has had any connectivity issues with this unit, after a few months of daily use. Recommended.

Not Happy
AC Adaptor was dead inside of a few months. Why skimp on such an important feature?

Good Value
I have three of these devices and all perform well. For a couple of the devices there was a problem with the fan and how hot the disks got. Tech support was very responsive and sent me a higher volume fan. While this device is expensive compared to USB 3.0 enclosures, it is considerably faster (4x) and in spite of requiring trays, which the FW800/USB3.0 version does not require, It is worth the money for the performance gain.

Terrible unit
I ordered in June of 2019 and as of February 2020 the entire unit has died. When I originally purchased it was a tiny bit noisy when the unit powered on. Eventually the sound would go away and it was very quiet. Recently, the noise wouldn't go away and on closer investigation it's the fan connection that is vibrating and making this unit so darn noisy. I was able to find the right tension so the sound would mostly go away. Last week the Softraid told me there were 3 of my 5 drives that needed replacing. I thought maybe that's another reason the drive might be noisy, that there's something wrong with the drives. After getting the new hem drives I went to install and the unit told me there was nothing wrong with the existing drives. Ugh. I still tried changing out the drives anyways but the software had taken almost 3 days to update a single drive. (I have this in Raid 5 with 5 6TD Seagate drives as per the Amazon recommendation). Today I was going to replace one of the 3 drives that originally showed error signs but the unit is non responsive. I can hold down the power switch and the unit will stay one for about 30 seconds and then it will turn off. I'm so frustrated with this unit and contacted Amazon support. It's barely 7 months of usage and it's out of warranty. My fear is that the new unit that they will replace or I have to purchase will not restore the Raid configuration I have. I got this so that if something went wrong with a drive I could easily replace. I have not found this to be a satisfactory experience or unit.

Terrific Thunderbolt Drive Box With Small Footprint
Just received this and so far working flawless with my 2012 mac mini and OSX Yosemite. Customer service is excellent - since no one had formally reviewed this at my time of purchase I had a few questions about the screw/trays which are no big deal. This is a really small enclosure making it easy to place anywhere. I only have one major quibble (otherwise would have given it 5 stars) - the fan's on the louder side and you lose your thunderbolt - computer connection when turning the unit off which is the only way to turn the fan off. Spoke with customer support and there's no way to leave your daisy chain intact without the unit on (even after ejecting mounted drives and individually turning them off) and thus the loud fan is always running. However, for a bare-bones unit it functions terrifically and it's not that big a deal to unplug a thunderbolt connection. Might buy another. Update 8/5/17 I just purchased two HGST 10tb Helium Enterprise drives here on Amazon and they work just fine in this drive case despite the fact that the drive page says they won't work for home users - not correct - see my review for HGST 10tb He10 SATA OF27604 - that latter number is critical as you CANNOT HAVE THE POWER DISABLE FEATURE with this drive case or other 'legacy' units. Both formatted easily using disk utility with my mac running Yosemite. So far so good!

Thought it was spinning my drives, but then realized it was fan
I bought direct from Oyen Digital and have owned for about a year. Sometimes it's quite quiet, and others, the fan is super loud. I thought it was the drives going bad and just spinning (also purchased same time), so I moved them to another enclosure to test the drives (which were fine) and even when I removed everything from all 5 bays, you can hear the fan just going. My solution is to just unplug when not in use, but that's not the reason I purchased, I will eventually replace with something else. It's like a MacBook when it's working really hard and the fan is super loud and actually vibrates and shakes the enclosure. I sometimes hit my table and it will go silent...and then get loud again.

A well implemented plug-n-play enclosure
My storage and performance needs have finally grown to the point where I wanted to start adding stripe sets to late 2015 5K iMac. I also wanted to eliminate the various external single drive enclosures that I have to free up more ports not he back of my well used Mac. This enclosure totally fits the bill. The build quality is awesome! The fan is very quiet, but does make a quiet sound, so you know it's working let's put it that way. Performance is also very good. My drive speeds were equal or better then they were in my previous enclosures that were also using Thunderbolt 2. Two things worthy of special note. 1) You can lock the bays closed so the drives can't be accidentally removed (which is great for raid disks), and 2) the power buttons along the button which allow you to turn off a drive require a long press-n-hold before they cut the power, so you won't be accidentally turning off your drives by bumping a button or two (again great for RAIDS). Overall it has exceeded all of my expectations and with the newer (larger) power supply I should be in good shape. Oh yea, for RAID I'm using SoftRAID Lite (I don't use anything other than RAID O) and I backup my stuff locally and to the cloud so redundancy is not a concern for me. The multi-threaded nature of SoftRAID over the single threaded apple RAID is a no brainier to me. Cheers.

Shipped quickly, works great, and did I mention it's screaming fast--even on a Thunderbolt 1 machine?
