This is a great tool that will last forever if you take the time to do as another reviewer suggested for the Estwing Sportsman’s Axe and sand off the varnish on the handle. It’s a clear shellac that will inevitably crack and the first thing you need to do after removing all the stickers is to get the factory varnish off. I’m so glad to have found the description for how to do this that I decided to write a review for the rock hammer in order to share it: First you want to tape off the metal part of the handle and use 100 grit sand paper to completely sand off the varnish on the grip (it will become lighter in color as you sand). Then rub neatsfoot oil on the leather multiple times daily until it stops soaking in. (It takes about 3-4 days and several coats of oil.) For a more detailed description of the process look for A. Swenson’s review for the 14” Sportsman Axe called “This is the real deal!” (Definitely worth reading, it’s a much better explanation of the process than what I’ve provided here.) Admittedly this is a bit of extra work for something you just purchased but if you’re like me and frequently customizing your tools, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. Lighter fluid works well for removing stubborn adhesive left over from the stickers and I used steel wool to polish out any scratches. I purchased this rock hammer after buying the axe and both have held up great with the sanding & oil process! I don’t expect to need another one in my lifetime, and I really enjoy the look and feel of this model compared to others out there.

Very well made and balanced. Don't forget to pair it with the Estwing leather sheath. Disclaimer states it's for wooden posts but I have had no issues with use for geology and it's forged steel so up for the task.
