How well does this item work compared to a standard clay bar?

It works fairly well. If you’re like me I clay once a year so I never really have a build up. If you only clay once every few year I would use the standard bar.

Can the clay surface be cleaned after use?

Just use soapy water for the lubricant and the cleaner.

Can I use this with Mequiars gold car wash with this?

My answer would be yes, using the car wash as a lubricant and not letting anything dry on the car, always keep the car wet and sudsy

Is this for clay or the cleaning pad? The pictures look like it is for the cleaning pad

It's a cleaning pad with a synthetic clay black pad that is supposed to help attract and trap tiny particles. It's designed to be used after washing your car prior to applying wax or "ceramic" coatings.
