What socket size can be used if no 3/8 wrench?

21 mm will fit, the 3/8 is the drive of the ratchet that fits in the center of the filter wrench

Will fit 2008 bmw x5 ?

Dont know..... it fits 2013 x3 and 2012 535i

Not sure what you mean here. There are no plastic seals, this is tool to remove the oil filter housing for BMW. I purchased this ibetter tool and it does "NOT" work well at all. I would recommend the following from Motivx / Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-Filter-Cartridge-Housing/dp/B01N54IT33/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Motivx+bmw&qid=1621773956&sr=8-2 Make sure you put your vehicle information at the top left to make sure it fits.
