It gives.such a fantastic view of life in Russia at the time. The variety of languages used by the characters keeps one of their toes. I am happy to know at least some French and no, of course, some Russian as well. An epic story with a great ending Review: worth the time investment - I’m not well read in classics and choosing this as one of my first was a big commitment for sure. Goodreads should let me count as 3 books 😅😅 This version, as there are many, was very well written. A delightful tale of intersecting families and individuals during a prosperous time in Russia. You clearly see the pressures personally and financially to keep up with life and appearances in the city versus the quiet, virtuous life in the country. These city pressures weigh extremely heavy on Anna and the life choices she has made. Personally I appreciated the short chapters as I felt I was progressing well even though it was perhaps not a ton of pages read. Glad I read and it was time well spent. Tolstoy is a wonderful writer. Who knows…maybe one day I’ll brave War and Peace?

wondrous book
This is an incredible book written by Tolstoy, a man with a great mind. It follows the lives of several characters, in particular Anna Karenina, her lover Vronsky, the thoughtful Levin and his beloved Kitty. The detail and insights are remarkable.

A beautiful book! The cover was bent and torn on the back though. I wish Amazon would wrap books in plastic to mail. I bought a new book that looks worn.

Tolstoy rocks the philosophy
This book has been on my mental booklist for several decades. It has only been since my retirement a year ago that I made any time to read it. My lack of detailed knowledge about Russian agriculture, politics, social structures made my reading slow, as I did sideline research as I read. Some of the arguments and debates about land, religion, etc. confused me. The story of Anna, Vronsky, Kitty and Levin, and their complex interactions was more easily tracked. Moreover, the narrative set up beautifully for the wisdom expressed in Tolstoy's conclusion.

Such a wonderful book. Tolstoy tells the story of the three families such a way that by the end of the story, you will feel like you truly know the characters. The writing is fantastic, at times Tolstoy really manages to capture the feeling of life in his vibrant descriptions. I genuinely feel like this is his best work, not “War and Peace” (don’t get me wrong, that is a fantastic book as well, but I love Anna K a lot more). Honestly, I can’t praise this book enough. The story is so immersive, there are some very interesting metaphors in there as well, and in the final pages, it gets quite philosophical. Still, the writing style is in my opinion quite understandable to the average reader (my first time reading this was at age 14, and I got through it just fine even though I was at a fairly average reading level and mostly read fantasy books).

En gripande och komplex berättelse med djup karaktärsutveckling. Ett måste för dig som älskar klassisk rysk litteratur. Boken kräver tålamod – men belönar med insikt, passion och tragik. Tidlös och stark.
