Meyerbeer: Le Prophete

It is a special treat to own this CD which, though not perfect, is very good. Is it ever possible to have a perfect performance of this extemely demanding grand opera? I saw Marilyn Horne in the Met's production some 30 or more years ago, and in this recording she lives up to the standard she set in the live performance. The other star in this recording is Henry Lewis (Ms. Horne's ex-husband) who maintains an excellent pace for this long opera and inspires an outstanding performance from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I wish I could use similarly laudatory words to describe the performances of Renata Scotto and James McCracken. The demands on the singers are so great that the odds of finding three great singers to perform these roles in the same performance may be more than we can realistically expect. Did Sony remaster the original recording? Seems doubtful - a missed opportunity.

As usual, Marilyn Horne is spectacular--5 stars. Renata Scotto sounds pretty good in this coloratura role, but she would have sounded a lot better five years earlier--4 stars. The recorded sound is not so good. It sounds like it was recorded in a cave with the microphones 20 ft. away from the singers. Unfortunately, there aren't any other commercially made recordings readily available, so this will have to suffice. Anyway, musically speaking, the opera itself is a bit of a bore. Plenty of empty coloratura fireworks, but very little melody. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, there is no libretto enclosed. Addendum 4/6/19. After listening to this opera again, I found it even less interesting musically than the first time and have decided to donate it to charity to make space.

This is really the only commercial recording of this opera. I had the original LP's which were never top quality pressings (Columbia). Hearing hit son CD, for me, is a vast improvement over the pressing and actually allows us to hear the very great performance preserved. Horne, Scotto, and McCracken bring vocal grandeur and musical excitement to a score the needs to be better known. There is some really great singing here. Hines and the supporting cast also add to ones enjoyment. Lewis's conducting is solid and frames the vocalists well. This is probably one of the best casts that could have been assembled to record this work. Highly recommended.

There's no point in commenting on the opera itself as it's a work familiar to most opera fans. For the casual listener, the Coronation March is the most recognizable "tune" in the opera as, in years past, it was played during commencements and May Day celebrations. The cast on this recording is a good one. In her youth, Renata Scotto was a top-tier vocalist who began her career as a coloratura soprano who gradually worked her way into the dramatic roles. She was a favorite at the Met for many years.

Although little spoken of today, Giacomo Meyerbeer composed nineteen operas and, in the nineteenth century, his works were among the most frequently performed. Le Prophète is one of his most highly regarded compositions and it is hardly difficult to see why. Virtuoso arias combined with lush orchestral interludes and elegant choruses make for a stunning experience. The cast here is magnificent, the singing splendid and the sound excellent. This is grand opera at its best. Highly recommended!

Great opera recording. - glad its back in the catalog. However, no indication if this has ever been remastered! That part is very frustrating. Was very over-reverberate and desperately needed a re-mnastering. Nothing sounds new here.

This is a wonderful performance. I heard the live Metropolitan Opera performance and it was memorable. But this CD is lacking a libretto, which completely limits my enjoyment. The text is crucial to appreciating what is going on at any moment. I know it is sometimes economically necessary to withhold it, but an downloadable link would certainly get rid of this difficulty. No such courtesy is offered here.

Les opéras de Meyerbeer ont eu longtemps mauvaise presse. Une réévaluation semble s'effectuer actuellement; cet enregistrement, déjà ancien, amorçait le mouvement: à l'époque, seul l'enregistrement Bonynge des Huguenots présentait officiellement une intégrale du compositeur. plus de trente ans après sa première parution, que nous offre cet enregistrement ?Commençons par évacuer les éléments négatifs: le premier est la prise de son, trop réverbérée, un défaut qui m'a semblé accentué par le dernier report sur CD; le deuxième tient à certains solistes: il n'est pas certain par exemple que Jérôme Hines, au terme d'une carrière prestigieuse qui l'a mené au Met et au Festival de Bayreuth, soit un Zacharie Intéressant. Je ne suis pas convaincu non plus par James Mac Cracken, pourtant une des vedettes incontestées du Met de l'époque mais dont la voix rocailleuse et la curieuse prononciation -on a toujours l'impression qu'il a "un cheveu sur la langue" sont assez gênantes, même si l'incarnation du personnage est parfaitement juste...A côté des ces menues imperfections, cet enregistrement offre de grandes joies. D'abord l'opéra est donné sinon in extenso, du moins sans coupure trop importante. Ensuite, Henry Lewis, l'époux à l'époque de Marylin Horne, si mes souvenirs sont bons, tient bien ses troupes en main et sait rendre aussi bien l'émotion du "Ah! mon fils" de Fidès que le dramatisme parfois un peu clinquant de toute la scène de la cathédrale au IVe acte. Marylin Horne est extraordinaire dans le rôle de Fidès et Renata Scotto encore impressionnante dans le rôle de Berthe, même si elle a, comment dirais-je ?, un peu dépassé la date de péremption...Bref, un excellent enregistrement dans l'ensemble, d'autant plus intéressant que le prix du coffret est tout à fait modique... Il ne peut pas concurrencer, à mon avis, l'autre enregistrement Lewis, celui-là "pirate", effectué par la RAI avec un Nicolaï Gedda extraordinaire, une Marylin Horne encore plus fantastique que dans l'enregistrement officiel et une Margherita Rinaldi absolument parfaite -je ne comprendrai jamais pourquoi cette admirable cantatrice n'a pas connu une carrière plus brillante au disque!- même si les seconds rôles sont nettement moins bons...L'enregistrement CBS reste une remarquable alternative: en dehors de ses grandes qualités musicales, elle est plus aisée à trouver et, je le répète, un prix véritablement intéressant.

Das Royal Philharmonic Orchestra unter der inspirierenden und fulminanten Leitung Henry Lewis' spielt den Meyerbeer, als wären sie im französischen Repertoire von Geburt an sozusagen zuhause. In dieser Einspielung ein Ausnahme-Klangkörper.Die große sängerische Besetzung, die Lewis um sich versammelt hat, lässt kaum Wünsche offen. Der Stern der Aufnahme geht an die hervorragende Marilyn Horne, die der Mutterpartie der Fides stimmlich und charakteristisch nicht ein Jota schuldig bleibt. Eine Paradepartie für die amerikanische Mezzosopranistin, die auch mit klangschönem Idiom überzeugt. Auch Renata Scotto kann in dieser Aufnahme aus dem Jahr 1976 noch einmal zeigen, dass sie eigentlich aus dem Koloraturfach kommt, wenn auch die Schärfen in der Höhe deutlich zugenommen haben im Laufe der Karriere.Den Tenor James McCracken in der Partie des Propheten Jean als Schwachpunkt der Aufnahme zu bezeichnen, scheint mir etwas arg zu hoch gegriffen. Sicher, seine Textbehandlung ist gewöhnungsbedürfig und wenn die Tessitura in den Höhen einen süß-lieblichen Tonanschlag fordert, flüchtet sich McCracken häufig in ein sonderbar klingendes flaches Falsett; insgesamt schlägt er sich doch mehr als achtbar.Wunderbar kantabel gibt sich Jules Bastin in der Partie des Grafen Oberthal und auch die drei Wiedertäufer sind mit Jerome Hines, Jean Dupouy und Christian du Plessis hervorragend aufeinander abgestimmt. Die zahlreichen Comprimarii sind ebenfalls durch die Bank weg treffend und stimmschön besetzt. Eine besondere Anerkennung muss hier aber auch noch dem formidablen Ambrosian Opernchor gelten, der seine zahlreichen Auftritte kompakt und stimmgewaltig prägnant gestaltet.

Según parece, ésta fue la primera grabación de esta ópera de Meyeerbeer, compositor injustamente olvidado hoy en día. No entiendo mucho a nivel técnico, pero es una ópera bastante amena y muy agradable de escuchar. Además incluye el ballet. Lo que no me gusta es que no incluya el libreto y tampoco ofrece una opción digital. Una lástima.

Verdi definiva l'Opera di Parigi come La grande boutique.. Ecco il Profeta di Meyerbeer è l'esempio lampante di tale definizione. Comunque edizione bellissima di un'opera "pompier" assolutamente da conoscere anche per poi ribadire come l'Opera italiana sia, per fortuna, ben altra cosa!
