Movies can't be any better than this.
Directed by Robert Redford, great acting by Will Smith and Matt Damon, and a great story with a great message told with a beautiful script in an equally beautiful setting. If you like Good Will Hunting, Out of Africa, and A River Runs Through It, you have to watch this film. Its one you'll watch again and again.

The Legend Of Bagger Vance Represents The Choice We All Face In Overcoming Adversity In All Aspects Of Our Lives
The Legend of Gagger Vance is one of the great movies of our time. it is a story of how people must the potentials within themselves no matter how life has beaten them up or pushed them down. As Bagger Vance says, "We have to get passed all of the Could-Haves and Should-Haves and Would Haves and find our Real Selves, that true self that we came into this world to be". This movie is about finding a harmony with God and Nature and Fate. Bagger Vance is a clear stand in for Divine Providence, which is always there to help people reach their true potential, no matter how shattered they have been by their life experiences.lwaBagger Vance says, "I have always been here and always been here for you. He accompanies the young Hardy Greves, who is the narrator and witness to this critical part of American History, the Pre-World War 1 economic optimism of the United States. through World War 1, through the Roaring Twenties and through the efforts of the United States to cope with the Great Depression. The admonition of Bagger Vance to, "Find that one perfect shot, to get oneself out of one's way and to see life's circumstances as something that must be accepted and worked with, to keep playing "That Game That Can Not Be Won, Only Played", to as an older man, now a widower and heading towards his own personal end will finally say, "So I Play On, Looking For My Place In The Field". He is rewarded by Bagger Vance, having reappeared at the end of his life, off in the distance, smiling and waving and inviting him to that final end that all of us who play The Game Of Life will face, especially if we Play The Game Of Life the way that it ought to be played. Two Thumbs Up and Five Stars for The Legend Of Bagger Vance.

If you like the trailer, you'll probably like the movie.
We saw this as a family using Amazon Instant Video. I chose it because I remembered hearing about it but had never seen it at a theater and couldn't remember what the reviews were. However, I liked the ensemble cast and have enjoyed other Robert Redford movies, the trailer was good, and my husband was willing to watch it, too. We are not golfers, but it looked like it was about more than golf, and it was. (I have to admit, though, some of my favorite moments in the movie were the golfing shots. It made me smile to see a middle-aged man in bare feet standing on sand, water all around him, trying to hit a little white ball back to the grass.)We had a good time watching it. I looked at the other reviews after we finished, to get an idea of what other people thought, and found that most people agreed with me. This is a movie that sets out to entertain, and it does the job. I've never seen a Matt Damon movie I didn't like, and Will Smith and Charlize Theron are usually good, too. The plot is pretty light, but it hits the basics: Our Hero has to start at a disadvantage, or it wouldn't be interesting, but he has to improve fast because the tournament is only two days. He has to stumble at least once before the end, to make the end interesting; that happens too. But you do get the happy ending and the promise of a better future, even though not every problem is solved. All that is good. I was not looking for a movie that would leave me discouraged and depressed. One of the reviewers thought that when the narrator (a young boy) was told by Matt Damon's character to go stand by his father, that that was really unbelievable and not well-supported in the movie. Maybe that reviewer went out to get some popcorn and missed the earlier part, in the locker room, when Matt Damon's character explained to the boy exactly why his father was an honorable man who had shown tremendous character in the face of difficult circumstances. He may have also missed the part where Matt Damon's character made it clear that the boy's father was someone who had always been his friend, and was a man he respected still. Personally, I liked that part of the story line, and I thought the criticism was unfair. The movie is set in the south, and you could be forgiven for thinking, based on the movie alone, that racism wasn't much of an issue there. Some people were critical of Will Smith's character; they thought casting him was racist and patronizing. Really? I thought he did a great job, and the idea that anyone could or would look down on him as a choice is surprising to me. I am not exactly sure what he was (although he seems to have been something like an angelic visitor), but he didn't bother me any more than the angel in "It's A Wonderful Life" bothers me. You shouldn't overthink these things too much. The setting is gorgeous (you can't go wrong with a beautiful golf course), the characters were likeable and interesting, the chemistry between the three competing golfers and between Matt and Charlize was good, and I liked the acting. The little boy was a charmer, so earnest and so very, very young. When I checked the Internet, I couldn't see that he's ever been in anything else; that's too bad, because he was really good. Some people didn't like Charlize Theron's accent. I wouldn't recognize a good southern accent if it hit me on the head, so I can't evaluate that, but I liked her. The movie was character-centered, it was subtle without being high-brow, and frankly, it was a great way to spend a Friday night at home with my husband and children. Robert Redford knows how to make a movie that delivers entertainment. He had a good cast and did a solid job. Will it change your life? No. But it was a fair match for the trailer, and I was happy I picked it.
