Will this work with playing with the guitar on the right leg?

I checked. It can be done (that is, if you want to use the support the other way around and place the guitar on your right leg).

Would this definitely not work with matte finished guitars?

I wouldn't count on it. The suction cups require a genuinely smooth surface to stay in place. I've tried using a similar device on a classical guitar with a smooth, matte finish and it did NOT want to stay attached.
