My Grandson is doing a film and media course at college and has found this to be not only interesting but full of invaluable insight. He loves it.

A brilliant book. Rather just a history of cinema, rather than a Top 100 films to see before you die. This book breaks cinema down in to different insightful chapters that approach cinema from different lenses. The historical history. The catagories of roles in cinema. The genres of cinema. The different countries making films. The directors. As well as notable films. Each section has a list of seven or eight key films to watch so you're endlessly getting notes that you can explore further. With tools like Youtube it's perfect for a quick search for a trailer or clips before delving back in. It is also suitable for children - there are no inappropriate films mentioned, but there is the occassional uses of the word sex.

I was really looking for a sort of "Halliwells" guide but this gives a more esoteric history of cinema rather than just a list. A great read (would still like a comprehensive list though).

The old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." Contrary to this expression, there's also an expression which is one of my all time favorites, "Great things come in small packages." That's exactly what this item is. This is a Christmas gift for my brother whose a screenwriter and knows just about everything there is to know about film, and this will be a great reference, nonetheless, 'just in case there are a few things he doesn't yet know.' Came shipped in with two other gifts, but was wrapped well enough in foam wrapping. The collection is rather impressive from what I was able to see of it. The case is one of the more impressive features, being (out of steel/metal), whatever you wish to call it, which gives the book that "old-style reel look." I was originally going to purchase this at a mall book store, but they were sold out. Great thing about this collection, what I've heard from reviews that is, that this collection is really worth what the inexpensive cost is. I'm not one to judge from an entertainment-industry point of view, but as the brother to one who is, I believed it is most likely a great gift, especially with the references. Maybe he'll even allow me to borrow it from time to time.

An encyclopidic work. Awesome.
