The Kondratiev Cycle: A generational interpretation

Reagan and Thatcher facilitated the deconstruction of the previous cycle and now something like Franklin D
I bought this book because I'm interested in politics and economics and trying to understand the relationship between them and how depressions occur and whether conservative or social-democratic politics make a real difference. I found Michael Alexanders analysis and arguments well constructed and thorough. He makes a compelling case for a Kondratiev cycle and how it produces both conservative and social-democratic political cycles, which he argues form part of a K-S cycle. Alexander sees both the conservative and social-democratic or as he puts it liberal phase of the K-S cycle as necessary parts of a successful capitalist model of human development. He makes a strong argument that whilst in his view that Reaganite/Thatcherite conservative phase was necessary after the peak in the expansionary phase post-1979/80, now capitalism needs a social-democratic phase to aid the next expansionary phase to develop post-2008. Alexander argues that both are necessary to achieve renewal after the peak. Reagan and Thatcher facilitated the deconstruction of the previous cycle and now something like Franklin D. Roosevelt or Clement Attlee neo-Keynesian phase would stimulate the expansionary phase of a 5th K-S cycle.Whether you come from the left or right politically he makes a strong case for both being necessary phases in the capitalist K cycle. I'd recommend The Kondratiev Cycle: A generational interpretation by Michael Alexander to anyone who wants to understand the political and economic cycle. Whether you agree or disagree his theoretical approach is very compelling and thought provoking, and there is room for further analysis with regard to how the war cycle fits into the K cycle and when the expansionary phase will start.
