Basically a dressed up UV-5R
I bought the camo version. Easy to program. Firmware version was exactly the same as a basic $19 UV-5R I bought from Radioddity a while back so the same Chirp file will work with both which is a nice feature.I didn't take pics of the power output into a dummy load but it's better than 4W on VHF and right at 4W on UHF. Easy to "unlock" with the three-finger procedure for access to GMRS freqs (which will also work fine with the factory ducky antenna). For aftermarket antennas, I'd recommend a Signal Stick (although they tend to be a bit heavy and, as a result, tipsy) or a thin Nagoya NA-24J to reach out to those repeaters. The one thing I didn't like is that, on this version, the LCD display kind of lags so when you're scanning the numbers all tend to run together. Thinking that was a one-off problem as none of my other Baofengs (one UV-5R and four UV-82HP) did that, I did an Amazon return (which I have to give super props to Amazon as to how easy this procedure is) to exchange it for another one. The replacement radio exhibited the same LCD display lag so I just loaded the factory Chirp file back into it and sent it back. Of course, I made sure the RF output was the same... I would've kept the higher powered unit, but they both were identical so, besides them all having the LCD display lag, at least there's some consistency there.Overall. It's a good looking radio. Identical to a regular UV-5R but if you want something in a different color or one that has a bit more bling to it, this is the one. That is, as long as you don't mind the weird LCD display lag. If you're not scanning and trying to look at the display, you may never notice it.Also, be advised, Radioddity doesn't sell individual batteries in your color so if you want a spare battery, it will have to be black.

Great radio, but hard to understand features if new to Ham radios
I bought this on the recommendation of a fellow worker, and he was right. It's a great radio. Notarubicon on youtube says it's the best by far, though it's not perfect.Comes with a standard antenna, battery, earpiece/mic for speaking through the earpiece, plus a charging stand. If you're new to Ham radios like I am, then some of the terminology will be foreign, and the manual doesn't explain it very well. Notarubicon will teach you.But what you won't be told is how to make it transmit. And it's not in the manual. Notarubicon will also show you that. The radios come locked, but in about 10 seconds you can unlock the radio so it will transmit. So, don't return the radio like I did. There's nothing wrong with the radio. They just don't tell you how to make it transmit. The downside is the small screen that isn't well lit, but once you are familiar with it, reading the screen will get better. My radoo worked for 2+ days, at 8 hours per day. The battery is only 17-1800mah, so 2 days is about the length of charge you will get. There is a 3800mah battery available (haven't gotten that yet) that will significantly increase the length of time for the charge. The radio is rather flexible in its capabilities.

Gets the job done, but leaves lots to be desired
Easy to program using the keypad if you are well-versed in radio usage. I would recommend buying the programming cable and using Chirp to program frequencies. Makes like a lot easier. Sound quality sucks but this is not Radioddity’s problem. The speaker is about 1” in diameter so don’t expect crystal clear audio at any volume. It’s about the same quality speaker as a 2004 iPhone. The radio itself is plenty powerful. It’s advertised as a 5w transmit power, but mine only got about 4. Plenty enough power to hit repeaters about 10 miles away if using outside. Inside, you’re limited to about 7 miles in a rural area. Buy an extension mic - it’ll have better audio and it makes the radio easier to use. The stock antenna sucks as well. A Diamond or Nagoya will make a world of difference. Stock battery lasts about a day if you’re mostly listening and only transmitting occasionally. I will be purchasing the extended battery soon. Cable for the charger is only about 3 feet long, so you’ll need to be close to the outlet to use it. No running it down behind your desk and along the wall to an outlet. Overall, this is a cheap Chinese radio but it has plenty of bandwidth and good power. The guts are good, you just have to add on the extras to make it a great radio. Oh and make sure you have a license to transmit on the frequencies you choose. It’s not hard or expensive to obtain the correct license. Middle school kids can obtain a Technician HAM license, and you can too. Or pay your fee and get a GMRS license that’s good for ten years. Overall, it’s a decent radio if you get the upgrade antenna and a hand mic. Forget about the “tactical” folding antennas. What are you, a mall ninja?
