Effective
I purchased this owl because we had an abundance of nuisance birds in the backyard. They made quite a mess. put the owl in a tree and the birds did not come around. I move the owl to a new tree every day. I had the idea to put it near my vegetable garden and I think it’s scaring away any creatures who were eating my vegetable plants. The owl is realistic looking. It’s solar powered, but worked right out of the box. It has a head that turns, flashing eyes, and it makes an owl sound. I think the key to its effectiveness is moving it frequently. I’m a nature lover so I wish I could just keep the aggressive, nuisance birds away, but I’m very happy to hear the sound of the nice birds from my neighbor’s yards and not have to clean up a lot of bird mess in mine.

Us it properly
I’m on the fence with this product. I gave it a 5 star because it’s a good concept and one of the better choices for this kind of decoy. It’s good quality, for sure!! U just have to use it properly. U can just place it outside and leave it, u have to move it around, a lot. When a had a rat in my garden, I would bring it inside during the day and place it outside at night, in different spots. I would even skip a day or two. After about two weeks, I skipped placing it outside for a few days and I put shiny ribbons on it and took old scraps from around the house and tied it to the owl, that way it can look like it had features and would move in the wind or when it moves. Not sure if my added scraps worked, but the owl and my method worked. The rat left, I did have to repeat this process a month later, because the rat returned. But, it’s been about 2 months now and I haven’t seen anything. I think it’s effective, enough to scare them away from a period of time. But, it’s not a forever type of solution, great for garden. It’s worth the money, if u move it around as I described. I left it out during the day once and it was facing my bird feeder. I was wondering were the birds were then saw I left the owl out. As soon as I turn it off and brought it inside, the birds returned. Soooo, yeah… get one, if u plan to use it right.

Helps keep the squirrels out of the front yard
I have a dog that barks at EVERYTHING!!!! I live in a forested area and there are zillions of squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and other little critters. Lots of oak trees around and in my front yard so we are inundated with squirrels all day long to eat the acorns. Thus my dog is barking all day long. I bought these in hopes of the squirrels being deterred. Which it does keep them at bay far enough to where she isn't as interested in them. However as some people have commented it doesn't always work. I do believe this is due to the fact the battery runs down. Mine is squawking all day long because even cars going by on the street will set it off. But that's ok with me because again it helps keep the squirrels away. When we have a few sunny days it works just as good as new. How long this will last is a waiting game. The motion detector will detect if the head is facing towards the area I want it to. However every time the head turns it doesn't return to the same spot "facing where I want it" With each turn is a little less in one direction therefore as the days go by it will actually face my porch; it eventually gets turned back around in the direction I want it within a few days. But I have two in the front yard so when one isn't squawking the other one is. I hope this makes sense.

Birds aren't fazed. Rabbits and ducks not bothered either.
Got this to keep birds and ducks from gathering and pooping on our patio. We have a bird bath out in our garden, and there is a river that runs behind our house. There are birds and ducks galore. We love this wildlife and encourage the birds (with the birdbath) to visit. Unfortunately though, they've taken that invitation to also include the large, covered patio area that runs the entire length of our house. This is not so much of an issue for half the year while we're home, but we spend the other half away. When we come back, we find the patio floor littered with bird and duck poop. This is the 3rd owl we've tried. The first 2 had "fins" on the back of their heads and were supposed to spin their heads when the wind blew. Neither of those worked with a breeze - - - they needed WIND! We decided to try this solar powered one. Pros: - The solar panel does work. We have it positioned on the outer portion of our covered patio where it does receive direct sun for about 4 hrs a day. - The head does spin whenever it detects motion. At night, the eyes light up as well. We have turned off the audio sound just because it's annoying, but that too does work. - I typically don't like the aesthetics of things like this. I'm not a garden gnome type of person. I like natural and organic decor and was worried this would look tacky sitting out on our patio. Though it's not bad looking, looks as real as a plastic owl can, it's still nothing that I'd consider "decor". The fact that it's naturally painted/colored does make it not too obvious though, and I have it positioned on the garden side of a post so it's not visible from inside the house. Cons: - Birds are not fazed by it at all. We were careful to place this on the opposite end of the patio from where the bird bath is in the garden because though we want to deter patio visits, we didn't want to scare the birds from their water feature. There is no issue with that at all and in fact, the birds walk right by the owl, trigger his head movement and are not bothered at all. - Ducks come up from the river behind our yard and make themselves at home on our patio too. They aren't fazed at all by this owl. We even loaned it to a friend who has a problem with ducks getting into their pool. In his situation, those ducks aren't bothered at all either. - We have rabbits that also frequent our yard. Though they are not a problem we were targeting with this owl, if rabbits are a nuisance in your situation, just thought I'd mention that they also just hop right by the owl without even blinking an eye. - The head swivels when movement triggers it. I don't know why, but it doesn't always return to face front again. Sometimes over time, I will find that the head is completely turned around (Linda Blair style) when at rest. It's easy enough to just twist it back to face front, but just want to mention that.

It keeps the birds away. But the motion sensor is either faulty or way too sensitive. There is no option to reduce sensitivity. I had to turn the hooting off as it kept going off non stop in the night and I couldn’t sleep.
