can you hand write on the labels with a sharpie?

Yes, this is what I ended up doing as I couldn't get the template and my printer on the same page. I used a fine-tip sharpie and they came out great!

With all the complaints about the use of laser printers and the associated heat, would these work using a ink jet printer?

Technically they will work. But the ink smears. So if you can print them and then peel and use and get the printed area wrapped up with the clear part then yes you can. But that is a pain. Very nice labels but not convenient.
