Nice background book
It was fun to see how they became a couple. Explains a lot about both Sherlock and Savich. Great read!

A combined volume to start the series.
This is a reprint of the first two books in the FBI series as a combined volume. It introduces FBI Special Agents who continue in the series. It is always best to read a series form the beginning. The first of the two novels, "The Cove," introduces a woman on the run, having escaped from confinement at a mental hospital. Sometimes it is out of the frying pan and into the fire. She makes some mistakes in assuming whom she can trust, and acquires some new allies. There is more than one crime being committed, and her actions turn over some rocks. The second of the two novels, "The Maze," introduces a young women who has trained herself for years to be an FBI Profiler in order to track down a serial killer. She becomes involved in more than one case, and risks her life to try to solve the original case that has consumed her for the past seven years. There are some surprises, and the case turns up unexpected information. The stories are well written, but the first novels of a series are often not the author's best. I do wish authors would use prologues to set the scenes for their stories. The author does use epilogues to wrap things up.

The Beginning
Canterine Coulter's "The Beginning" is the first in her "FBI SERIES". I have read several other books in the series and was very glad to have found the beginning since it introduces some main characters that appear in the subsequent stories. If you like ice cream, the story contains a very good ice cream parlour - which, of course, plays an important part in the book. The town in which the action occurs seems to be a quiet, slow-paced old fashioned town. It even has a couple old geezers sitting around on main street playing checkers. The townspeople are very proud of their town and keep it in top-flight condition. Nice place to live... if you can...The story is complete with a girl in hiding, a dead father who is terriorizing her with phone calls and personal appearances, an elderly matron whose nose is into everything (and who is trying to play match-maker for another character), and an occassional freshly dead body, and an investigator who is certainly not what he claims to be!The plot was, perhaps, a little off the wall asking the readers to believe that a whole.... well, I shan't spoil it for you. You just need to read it.Nothing is as it seems...

A good read!
We read one of Coulter's books that was later (time wise) in the FBI series and it was so readable that we decided to order this one which is the first two books in that series. We were not disappointed. Her characters are closer to being "normal people" than you find in a lot of other authors' series books. No one is in constant agony over his or her own personal psychological problems, which can get very old over time. The main characters are also not indestructible super heroes who leap tall buildings in a single bound two hours after being beaten half to death by the bad guys. They are just well written books with good plots and decent character development. From book one onward these books provide enjoyable, fast moving reading. If you prefer reading a decent mystery/cop/spy book to watching TV (or even in addition to watching TV), try these books.

Closely related books
While looking for an FBI who-done-it kind of book, Catherine Coulters' books were rated well. I'd never read her stuff before, so I thought I'd start at the beginning with the box set. I can't say as much as I'd like, it might spoil the book for another reader. But the first 90 pages of, The Cove were quite frustrating. They had a premise and a nugget of an idea, and just kept regurgitating it over and over and over again. With considerable mention to the Ice Cream Shoppe at least 200 times. The Maze seemed to follow the same footprint as, The Cove. The main characters playing the roles of FBI agents, combines the physical & computer prowess of Dillion Savich. He's coupled with a rookie female agent named, Sherlock. Their close encounters almost mirror those of our protagonists from, The Cove. I kept thinking while reading, The Maze- "I sure wish one of these agents would put a couple of these clues together." Some other characters that get some play end up having absolutely nothing to do with the plot or diluted subplot. Also kept thinking, "I've got to finish this book to get onto something else."

Great books, great characters, great author!
These books are great! I read them over 20 years ago the first time, so there was much I didn't remember.Catherine Coulter is a fantastic author. She delivers suspense, intrigue and romance with equal intensity. After reading these first 2 FBI series books, I want to go back and read them all again. You'll fall in love with her characters and look forward to seeing what happens to them in her next book.Ms Coulter, you have been given a marvelous talent and I applaud you for using it well.

I really loved the idea of putting the two first books together
I really loved the idea of putting the two first books together. It was my first time reading this author and having the ability to read these books back to back created familiarity and made me a new fan of her. She kept it realistic and exciting. I finished one and could not wait to get to the next. The only thing that kept it from reaching five stars was not being to clear on what happens to her parents and ex brother in law after making them such a significant part of the story. If that us cleared up in future novels of hers that I plan on reading then I will probably come back and add the fifth star.

An excellent beginning to an exciting series
I had read a few of this series in the past but wanted to start and listen to them in order. I found that my library didn't have the entire series on unabridged audiobook. I am a chronic rereader or in this case a relistener. The MP 3 format is affordable and easy to store. I'm starting from book one in the series and will listen to the entire series.Great author with stories that grabs you from word one and don't disappoint.I am thrilled that I get two stories for one low price!Am just finishing the second story and will go onto the next two audiobooks in this series.
