Plays 4k Blueray Movies Excellent AND as a bonus it also plays SACD, DDS, XRCD Premium Audio CDS!
Great player for all disc type media. BONUS: (Stereo to Multi surround sound systems) Plays SACD,DDS,XRCD single and double layer, stereo and Multi music cds with excellent sound quality. Of course the 4K Blueray is outstanding. (Be sure you use at the minimum a 4k HDMI cable. I use a 8K HDMI works perfect. supports 3-D movies. Vert easy to setup. Be sure to look at the "settings" [ Far upper right of the first menu when first turned on] before using to be sure everything (Video & Audio) matches your TV, Sound system, etc.

Good Player
I was hesitant after reading others reviews about the player freezing while playing 4K movies. I’ve had zero issues. 4K, Blu-ray and DVD formats all play well and sound great. Well, after watching many 4K movies it finally happened. Blade Runner The Final Cut version froze twice. Pressing the next scene button made the movie continue.

Maybe my unit is a bit of a lemon, but likes say there is no disc.
Well, I gotta say it’s very temperamental about reading discs and how it reacts to various discs. Refuses to play many. If I hold it upside down and beat on it a little while it generally starts working again - kind of disappointing. Discs are clean.

2018 hardware inside
Sony used to release a new model every year. Now they've stopped that abd just do software updates to keep it current. This wouldn't because bad thing, but once the hardware gets so old, software updates can't help it. This is running from 2018 hardware (UBP-X700). THE "M" releases in 2021 is identical, but just includes a hdmi cable. Since 2018 to 2025, Sony has deleted alot of apps from the players. Alot of these apps weren't stuff anyone would use, but since they now have extra space from removing apps, why not add Disney +, Paramount, HULU, and some current apps to take their place. I know most people use their smart tv for apps, but for a kitchen, or portable non smart tv you have that you bring on vacations only, this player would be useful to hook to them with just those 3 apps added. If you are thinking of getting the new UBP-X700U, don't do it. It's the same 2018 hardware. Identical. All they did was remove every streaming app, and took away wifi. Now you have to use a ethernet port to do a firmware update, or it won't get done. Couldn't thry have just left the wifi on it just for software updates. The BDP-S560 released in 2009 had wifi just for software updates only, with no streaming apps. So, yes, it can be done that way. If you're wanting to get the most current and best Sony bluray player get the UBP-X700M or UBP-X800M2 only. These have apps, what's left on them, and wifi to do updates. The 800M2 model has 3 steaming apps, but has Bluetooth. The 700M model has 10 apps, but no Bluetooth. It really depends what u prefer. Don't pay more money, for nothing, for the 700U when u get way less features compared to the 700M. Anyone needing a bluray player now, better hurry and get the 700M or 800M2 now before they sell out, because they won't be anymore made. The stripped "U" models are replacing them after all the M's old stock sells out. Avoid the new "U" series at all costs.

Unreliable Layer Changes
I've owned this player for a few years now, and it consistently has issues with layer changes in triple-layer discs (ie any longer, epic-length movies). A couple of hours in, movies will just suddenly freeze up, and can't be fixed except by turning off the player for a few minutes and then trying again. This happens every single time. Recently, it's started having issues with perfectly clean, brand-new discs too. Apart from that, it feels cheap, the menus look like they're from the year 2000, Dolby Vision is a manual toggle for some reason, and performance is mediocre at best.
