My kids used this type (there is another set with a variety) to get as close to 5oz as possible, and came in 1st and 2nd overall and 1st for their dens. Of course there are other things to do, but these weights are great, because they are embedded. The only consideration is that the car must not be too thin to accommodate these.

Worked out great for Pine Derby car. After holes are drilled, just put weights in place, and secure with glue.

My boys and I built 10 PWD cars over the past 7 years, and these weights are absolutely the coolest we've ever come across, even better than the cylindrical ones that you cut with scissors. These little weights are a great way to bring your sleek design up to maximum weight. It gives you flexibility to put the max weight in a tight spot, but it comes at a price.
