KEY-BAK Original Retractable Key Holder Keychain with a Black Front, Steel Belt Clip, and Split Ring

A review of the retractable key ring by KEY-BAK #485B-HDK Retractable Reel with 48 inch (122 cm) Kevlar Cord, Black Front, Steel Belt Clip, 8 Ounce Retraction, Split Ring Tagged like most cattle at the office I have a badge which needs to remain in plain sight for viewing by security and to be used to swipe at gateways and doors. I had to buy a couple new retractors each year when they jammed or the string wore through and broke. Office supply store retractors are cheap gumball machine prizes compared to this Key-Bak. The Key-Bak is a beefy, serious retractor. Yes, it is heavier and more bulky but it is not larger than my belt and the large clip holds it securely against a belt loop. Although it only has my badge and one or two other cards it makes you feel like Larry Daley in Night at the Museum! It's a durable, strong retractor that works smoothly. If anything the weight makes me more aware of whether I have my badge with me or not; with this I have not yet made that pointless walk from the parking lot to the door only to remember my badge was back at the car. Made by a company in Ontario, CA it is a heavy duty reliable retractor. Well worth the cost over the gumball versions. [3 Year Update]: 34 months later and this key-bak still looks and works the same as it did when I bought it. Seriously, it is brand new. I have used this for almost three years every weekday for work. The cord is not frayed, the recoil is still as strong as ever, the chrome back is pristine and the paint is not chipped. It has never refused to recoil and always fully retracts. It has been and still is an awesome key-bak. I LOVE this thing. I obviously do not need a new one, but I would not hesitate to buy this again whenever I need a key-bak. Absolutely top quality.

Good and sturdy

Works exactly as advertised. The clip itself is larger than I thought, but I bought it for it's functionality. The chain pulls and retracts smoother than I expected. All in all, very little to complain about.

I purchased Apr 27, 2022, and today, February 11, 2025 the string snapped, so with multiple uses on most weekdays, it lasted *almost* three years. That is durable enough for me to give it 5 stars and buy it again. I carried 11 keys and two alan wrenches on it and it was nearly too strong. I might have been able to use a slightly weaker one. The clip held onto my jeans securely, I usually don't wear a belt, and it didn't bother me at all.

Very nice holder for the money. Love the fact that it has the cable instead of a string or rope. All the ones that I've ever bought with a rope on it of some sort, have always frayed and broken. Had a short 24 in many years ago, where the spring inside the holder went before the cable. So to be able to find one with a 48-inch cable on it was a huge Plus. Gave it a five-star and durability for now, cuz I haven't owned it that long but it works very well. We'll revise my star rating if it deteriorates for brakes and a. That I think it should hold up in. Until that time occurs, this is a five-star product and I highly recommend. Update June 2025 - had this now 5 years. Still going strong Still 5 star. Cable is just now showing some wear at the key ring and cable is starting to fray. But after 5 years? Not bad. Will update when or if it breaks

This is for the 20oz force, with 28" cord. The strength is excellent (far too much for what I need, but that is my fault). I don't think I would ever carry enough keys at work for this thing to sag down--even if I was holding 3 people's key sets). The problem is 2 fold. First, the "Kevlar" string already frayed the first night, which had very little use (I retracted it and used it maybe 8 times total). Second, the belt clip doesn't have anything to keep it from sliding up and off (many clips have a small bump at the bottom so the belt is locked in place). So every time I went to pull the keys out and up (to insert them in a lock at or higher than waist level), the entire keyring holder slipped off my belt and smacked me in the hand. The other parts seem well built, and don't suffer from the usual problems these types of units do (ie weak attachment of the cord to the split ring, plastic body, no screws to hold it together, etc). It is solid metal, with a good quality attachment to the keyring and a metal screw holding it all together. If they just fixed the cord (wrap it in plastic like the braided wire ones, or just use braided wire) and made a bump-out on the bottom of the belt clip, it would be pretty close to perfect!

I have used this for years. They are sturdy and reliable. All previous ones had an open chain but the most recent one has a braided chain instead. They don't break down, they only wear out with use.

Kevlar cord is the real deal, very sturdy. Doesn't snag, easy to clean, and doesn't get tangled. Casing is lowkey and durable. Retractable cord pulls with enough force to keep about 10 keys retracted, I haven't tested more. Length of the cord is longer than I need to. No complaints. I'd buy for friends as gifts, because I don't think I'll need to buy for myself again because of the great quality. Decided to write a review after 1 year because it's just that good.
