Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras
The Opteka HD² Slide Copier for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras works great and easy to use. I digitized about 120 slides for a 80th Birthday DVD and it work flawlessly. Great product and a great price and super fast deliverly.

did a poor job of packing an item that includes a fragile ...
Once I received an undamaged duper, the Opteka worked well. The problem was that the seller, 47th Street Photo, did a poor job of packing an item that includes a fragile glass plate (the light diffuser). I opened the box to be greeted with shards of glass everywhere. In a few days, they (the seller) did send a return label via email, and somewhat over a week later I got an undamaged replacement (which was just luck, since it was no better packed than the original).I am giving the Opteka four stars only because of receiving the damaged duper. Other than that, it works very well indeed, turning out good looking slide dupes. It does take a few minutes to get rolling, but once you get a system down, you'll go through slides at a decent clip. While you won't be able to work as fast as with a scanner, I think you'll find the results are better than with all but very expensive scanners. How do you work the thing? Simple: screw it onto the lens of your Canon DSLR via the lens' filter threads (there's an included step up adapter ring). Worked well on my Canons. You may have to experiment to find a lens that offers enough zoom, while being able to come to focus. I found an old 18-55mm Canon that I had hanging around worked well.Then...load your slides into the tray, focus (once focused you can loosen a set screw and carefully rotate the tray to level). Set to aperture priority, set in f/10 or f/11, point the camera at a light colored wall a few feet away, turn on your external flash (recommended) or enable your on-camera flash and fire away. Yep, just that simple. ;)The results? Mine look good even when viewed on my 60-inch TV. Of course undamaged, properly-exposed slides will come out better than dicey ones, but a few minutes with Photoshop served to make even the most gross looking transparencies look good if not new. I'm happy.

bad add info
Nothing in the add said anything about adaptors need to use with the EOS system and nowhere were any offered I would actully rate this at below 1-star since it is totally useless at it arrive. Also among the worst instructions we in the package. Definitely a candidate for the "Gong Show"

A step down
Bought this based on read reviews. Does not live up to it. Photos are highly vignetted and the position of the slide holder is offset from center (when zooming in to get better frame filling you lose the bottom of the pictureThis is used with a Canon 50d with a 24-105 f4L lens.I used the Opteka to scan two trips from Jamaica and Breckenridge (shot in raw for maximum ability to adjust) and then compared them to a Plustec 7500i scanner in Lightroom 3.4.PlusesThe scans took a fraction of the time- one role - 10 minutes vs 2 hours.Color saturation and post processing.NegativesHigh vignettingmisalignmentsome distortion caused by the Opteka lens, (high aberration)no ability to clean up artifacts (Plustec with Silverfast use a uv scan to remove)More after scan processing.ConclusionIf you do want a cheap way of scanning old slides and just want to make some 4 x 6's then go ahead and buy. But if you want higher quality scans, stick with a dedicated scanner.

Works fine but doesn't accept thicker plastic framed slides
Works fine with my Canon XSI w/18-55 Kit Lens. Slides do require minor cropping and tuning after taking the picture of them - nothing to complain about. My only real annoyance with this thing is that it only fits my paper/cardboard style framed slides - my thicker plastic framed slides (many from Germany) do NOT fit in the device. I think I will probably go through all my thinner framed slides first, and then disassemble it and reassamble it with some kind of spacer to make room for the fatter slides. If it wasn't for the issue with the thicker slide frames it would receive 5 stars.

Wow. Why didn't I try this years ago?
I've suffered through many hundreds of wasted dollars on low/mid end 35 mm purpose- built slide scanners. This thing blows the doors off them all. Yes, it's just a flimsy plastic thing, and the slide holder doesn't seat as snugly as we'd like. But so what. We get great results. And for cheap!

slide holder thickness is an issue
None of my slide holders fits in. I have 5-6 types of slide holders, either with or without glass and each of them are thicker. I don't know what to do?

Fast and convenient way of copying slides
I have a few hundred 35mm slides I want to copy and save as DNG files on my computer. These slides go back 40 years. I started to scan them on a flat bed scanner but could see that this was going to take simply ages and ages. I bought this piece of kit and use it attached to an Olympus 60mm 1:2.8 Macro ED MSC lens. The camera is an Olympus OM-D E-M1. Following advice I read elsewhere I removed the lens from the slide copier. I needed a 52mm to 46mm step down ring to fit to the Opteka to my lens. I have rigged my camera to my tripod and experimented with a daylight office desk top lamp and simply aiming the camera into to the sun on a bright day. Using the desk top lamp worked well but I will have to do some post camera processing in LR CC to adjust the color balance. Shooting using available light on a bright day gave a better in camera result and I will stick to this method sunlight permitting. The slide carrier takes 3 slides and there is a little plunger that ensures they are located in perfect alignment to the lens. I have shot 6 test slides and am really happy with the result and all set now with a workflow to take my precious color reversal slides into the digital age. A great piece of kit that I like and will make slide copying easy. A bit pricy perhaps but a good investment I feel and cheaper that paying a commercial slide copy service.
