Q: how do you get them to move? are they locked somewhere?

You holding them from the plates where the screw holes are and you'll be able to snap them into the closed position. You won't be able to if you try to bend them with your thumbs on the raised center of the hinge.

Q: mine do not move no matter where you hold them-tried it all. they do not close.will have to take them to the hardware store and find out

The hinges go the opposite direction I thought they would. Once I figured that out m, they were easy to open. Hold the mounting plates with fingers on top and thumb on furthest edge on both sides. Push with thumb underneath and hinge will open on opposite side.

Q: Will a push to open latch work or are these hinges too stiff?

Although stand alone, out of the package, they are stiff. Once you attach them to a door they become manageable. The smaller/lighter weight the door the more snap upon closing.
