Nice learning toy
I bought this for my great-nephew for Christmas and he loves it. I did have to return the original and reorder it because the remote didn't work on the first one but the second one had no issues according to his mom. He absolutely loves it and it's a great learning toy for him. Who would have thought a 5-year-old would be learning to code? It's awesome!I can't speak to the sturdiness or durability since he hasn't had it long but at least it's still working after a few months!

Fun educational toy
This is an updated version of the coding critter from two years ago. The wand and booklet make it very child friendly for my kindergartner.

Defective product
I purchased this item for my nephew as a Christmas gift. We pulled it out today to try it for the first time. Immediately after putting batteries in the coding wand, it began to get hot. I double checked the orientation of the batteries and they were placed correctly, so we switched them out with another 2. The same thing happened. I have emailed learning resources to see if a new wand could be obtained. Ill update once I hear back and see how this gets resolved. Too expensive of a toy( even on sale) to not be able to even use it once.

Fun and creative
My daughter has really enjoyed it. Screen free play time. It comes with a book with different “codes” to type into the wand.

Great toy for 4yo+
This toy is made for preschoolers and early elementary aged children. My 4yo twins have really enjoyed playing with the Coding Critters (we have this dragon and the unicorn version) although they can't play with them independently. There are two modes: Spell mode and Coding mode. The Coding mode has the horn glowing white, and when you program a sequence (e.g. Forward, forward, left, back, back) and then hit the center flame button, it executes that sequence. This allows you to set courses for your kid (e.g. go through the castle door and bump the ball) and you can use the included cardboard chits to help plan out what the sequence should be. Switch to the spell mode by hitting the button below the D-pad. This mode takes 4-button sequences on the D-pad that will do something like "dance" or "guard" or "sing a song." The sequences for these are the spells in the included spellbook. It has a sensor in the nose that allows it to detect or track objects a few inches away, such as the included ball. I'm pretty sure both the wand and the nose sensor are IR; we noted degraded performance when the Vive Lighthouses were on, so if you have any sort of IR interference these may not work as well. Bright sunlight might also interfere. We do have both the dragon and the unicorn version of this toy, and thankfully they don't seem to interfere with each other. My 4 year olds need constant supervision with these; they can't read yet so they need help finding the right spell in the spellbook, and if they accidentally switch between Coding and Spell mode they sometimes need help switching back.Batteries: Takes 5 AAA batteries, not included. If the batteries are low, first it will start failing to play songs but still move around, and then it will stop moving at beep at you. So if it's not playing music and dancing appropriately, try some fresh batteries first. We found that it doesn't work well with rechargeables, either.Included extras: The spellbook is integral to play (unless your child memorizes all of the spells) but it's flimsy paper held together with staples. The included catapult is fun but also functional; the fireballs may not be with us for much longer. Some of the other items included feature in the spellbook to give your child and their dragon scenarios to act out and for imaginative play. They're all either plastic or laminated cardboard.

Educational & Fun Coding Critter
We got this coding critter toy for our almost 4 yr old to use, play with and learn from too. She loves it and is having fun with it. It's a great first coding critter toy with screen-free coding for younger kids, but it is something that we have to help with her at least a little bit. We've gotten and used these coding critter toys and the like before with our other older kids and they loved them and had a relatively easy time without too much help, but our almost 4 yr old has to have a little bit more help to get it started and use it sometimes. Sometimes she's able to do fine with it without help so the more she plays and uses it, the more she'll be able to do it on her own. It has a lot of educational value and helps with teaching them about coding, math, and developing their imaginations as well.

Dysfunctional remote + no help from manufacturer = almost useless product
I was really looking forward to this for my son. The up button on the remote didn't work out of the box, meaning the dragon could not move forward and many of the spells could not be executed. Learning Resources said they would send me a replacement remote IF they found one, but after weeks have not sent one and have responded to my request for a new box (which I guess means no, with the hope to I will forget about their product). There's a catapult accessory has been enjoyed a little, but not what I bought the product for.

Great educational toy
Bought this for my grandson's fifth birthday. He loved it as soon as he unwrapped it and was able to use the controls quite easily with some help from his older brother who had used a programmable Beebot at school. He loved the spell book, particularly the program for making the dragon sing happy birthday. As a former teacher, I think this is great to teach children simple programming in a fun and imaginative way.
