I purchased the dcd998b hammer drill. when using it and i release the trigger, there is a loud clunking sound. is this normal?

Not sure your meaning "clunking". There is a sound where the device is using the rotational energy to transfer back to the battery. It makes a noise during this braking time. This is mostly heard when the drill is not driving (actively loaded). Try actually drilling/driving something and see if the sound goes away (resistance to drilling or driving will stop the bit). If the noise persists, there may be something wrong.
