yes, you can be any character. I also was the host and chose my character to be the restaurant owner because that made sense to me too.

Is this played around a table or can you be interactive?

You can either play around a dinner table with a sit-down meal or you can mingle as part of a buffet-style party (or a mix of both!) It's very flexible to adapt to the way you want to play. There are three main acts so you can play around a three-course meal or just break in-between acts for refreshments. If mingling, players should question every suspect in every act to be able to solve the mystery!
