Review: A story of romance told from the heart. Saddam Hussein was certainly flawed. But he was never the monster his hypocritical enemies have made him out to be. You can see this from Zabiba and the King.

Good book

I picked this up to get a glimpse into Saddam's mindset - how often can you look into the mind of dictator as self-insert character? I don't feel like I discovered much. This book is the very least of Saddam's sins and yet it is the one that has personally vexed me the most. It's galling as either a romance or a socratic dialogue. Perhaps it is better in the original language, perhaps you have to know a lot about 90s Iraqi politics to appreciate the allegories? But truthfully I think the whole thing is a rushed mishmash of ideas struggling to hang on to a dull framing device.
