I have over 40 dell servers, and more than 20 synology systems in production. This system is the loudest of all of them. I realize this is a rackstation, but the fans in the power supplies cannot be slowed down through software and are where the noise comes from. The DSM settings for sound only effect the chassis fans, and no setting modifies the sound. You cannot even hear the chassis fans on the loudest setting due to how loud the power supply fans are. In summary if you intend to run the device behind a closed door, it may be tolerable.I have not tested performance yet, and will update this review when I do.

I wanted a rack-mounted server, and I thought this would be a good investment (with the dual power supplies). I ignored the other reviews because I intended to put the server behind a closed (closet) door. Well, it's still too loud! It sounds like a blowdryer - no, really, it does!You'll have to put this thing in a soundproofed case, room, or somewhere isolated from the rest of your living area if you want to sleep at night.Besides that, the performance is nice. It's Synology - easy to use. I liked the server; I just didn't like the noise. It's about twice as loud as most of the other Synology servers: 40db

The redundant-PSU version has power supply fans that constantly run at maximum speed, are not configurable, and generate a huge amount of noise. The larger chassis fans are configurable but they are not the ones making the noise. This server is twice as loud as any other server in the rack. Do not buy this product.

Great product but it really is too loud (server closet). It is louder than my HPE ProLiant 360p Gen8 server at idle. Plus if you want to unlock all the best features, like the read/write cache you need to use 2 of the proprietary Synology M.2 NVME drives with the Synology adapter.
